Mattie is a seizure-prone chocolate lab of a neighbor of mine. She disappeared yesterday, after a day of seizures (even on high meds). We all, including her loving owners, figured she had gone into out deep woods and died. We organized a big search party. We all have dogs, on this round mountain, and we would want it for our own. Working people took today off. Yesterday, we systematically covered the 50-75 acres of mountain gorges that we thought she could possibly be in.
We had our fit dogs with us, as scouts. I carried a 2-meter ham radio that could summon help for any of us (or the dog) from a great mountain repeater network. I carried water, too. By dark last night, I carried four ticks that I found today. We quit at dark.
This morning, the search began again. I joined for a while, but had to leave to let a contractor in the house. He and I were standing on the front deck of my house, listening to the echo's of the Monday search party's voices. Organized. Methodical. Hard to pin-point, but I think I knew where they were and where I'd rejoin the search (an old logging trail below my house).
Then I heard Roy yelling to Mike (the dog's owner): Here she is-is -s! She is alive-live-ve!!!
