Need suggestions for songs to put on a CD for my wedding
reception. It's going to be an outdoor wedding, dressy casual. I want to mix oldies stuff with some good rock (nothing that would offend the 'parents' who are in their late 70's!), some Sinatra for the parents, and some of my own preferences (country).

Any suggestions? Especially 60's-70's stuff? Motown?

1. "At Last" --Etta James
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 09:17 PM by fudge stripe cookays
I walked down the aisle to it, and it still gives me happy chills. Since he was Canadian, we played the original Guess Who "American Woman" when he was retrieving my garter. It was fun.

Here's a few of our favorites:
"One of the Best Ones" - Bruce Cockburn (on 'Nothing But a Burning Light' CD)
"Big Love" - Little Village
"Have a Little Faith in Me" - John Hiatt
ANY Frank Sinatra Greatest Hits interspersed with the other stuff
One or 2 of the Ella Fitzgerald "Songbook" CDs, like Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, etc.
"Let's Stay Together" Al Green
"As" Stevie Wonder

All very tasteful.
I'll think of some more later...

4. We did that when we got married in our backyard.

Cassettes, not CDs.

Our processional was "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.
Our recessional was "Big Big Love" by k.d. lang.

Our friends threw us a "music shower", where everyone brought a musical selection to put on tape. We ended up with about 4-5 hours of music to play. Everything from Mozart to Duke Ellington to Willie Nelson to Sonny & Cher to Don Ho. Very cool. I recommend it.

add on edit: Can't forget "I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock And Roll". The Dave Edmunds version, not the Nick Lowe - which features Huey Lewis and the News.

14. First dance song will be "Stand Still" by Phil Vassar, goes
like this:
In the spring I dreamed of summer
To feel the sunlight on my skin
But in the heat I'd start to hunger
For that autumn chill again

I've always spent my time anticipating things to come
But now I wish that I could slow the world down once this once

And stand still
I'm right where I wanna be
Holding you in the middle of the moment of my life
The way I feel I don't care what's in front of me
Or what's behind me I just wanna stop the wheel
and stand still

I have driven by a sunset
And let it pass without a glance
I took so many things for granted
counting on a second chance
But touching you right now is something I don't wanna miss
I know my finest hour is the one I'm living in

Stand still
I'm right where I wanna be
Holding you in the middle of the moment of my life
The way I feel
I don't care what's in front of me
Or what's behind me
I just want to stop the wheel
And stand still

With all of our family and friends there, this is how I will feel, with them as well as with my husband.

2. Oh, by Dave Matthews Band
One of my very favorites. I think it would be a great song for the groom to have played for his dance with his bride. But it is not a real slow, sappy song. And given the current events in the world today, the lyrics are appropriate. Give it a listen if you are not familiar with it. It is on the Some Devil CD.

Oh, congrats on your wedding, hope you have a lifetime of happiness! :toast:

that I heard a lot of people at working talking about them last year, so I'll check that out!

16. I don't know your age group but
my son turned me on to Dave Matthews in the mid-90s and it is my favorite band (and I am not young). They have a great sound and Dave writes some haunting lyrics that can really deliver a message if you pay attention to them. Another one I think is perfect for a wedding is Let It Grow by Eric Clapton.

13. hehehe
Yep. But I think you should be daring and original - make people go "huh?"

As long as you DON'T PLAY THE GODAWFUL "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton, which is NOT really a song about domestic bliss. He wrote it because he was pissed about waiting for her to get ready for a party, and he is being exasperated and sarcastic. The weepy guitar is there for cover.

Plus, he gets sloshed and she has to help him get out of the car. Any woman married to an alcoholic can attest that is NOT an ideal marriage.

10. My father and I danced to "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole and
Natalie Cole. It was perfect. :)

Our bride and groom dance song was "Ribbon In The Sky" by Stevie Wonder. I've always loved that song and swore that if I'd ever get married, it would be played somewhere during the reception.

My father-in-law loves Big Band music, so we danced to "Moonlight Serenade" by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He absolutely adored it. :)

11. A little obscure, but this Stan Rogers song is great.
Where the earth shows its bones of wind-broken stone
And the sea and the sky are one
I'm caught out of time, my blood sings with wine
And I'm running naked in the sun
There's God in the trees, I'm weak in the knees
And the sky is a painful blue
I'd like to look around, but Honey, all I see is you.

The summer city lights will soften the night
Til you'd think that the air is clear
And I'm sitting with friends, where forty-five cents
Will buy another glass of beer
He's got something to say, but I'm so far away
That I don't know who I'm talking to
Cause you just walked in the door, and Honey, all I see is you

(CHORUS)
And I just want to hold you closer than I've ever held anyone before
You say you've been twice a wife and you're through with life
Ah, but Honey, what the hell's it for?
After twenty-three years you'd think I could find
A way to let you know somehow
That I want to see your smiling face forty-five years from now.

So alone in the lights on stage every night
I've been reaching out to find a friend
Who knows all the words, sings so she's heard
And knows how all the stories end
Maybe after the show she'll ask me to go
Home with her for a drink or two
Now her smile lights her eyes, but Honey, all I see is you

(Chorus twice)

19. Here are some
Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls

For Your Love - The Yardbirds

God Only Knows - Beach Boys

Let's Stay Together - Al Green

Your Song - Elton John

Betcha By Golly Wow - The Stylistics

Could It Be I'm Fallin' in Love - Spinners

Happy Together - The Turtles

Air That I Breathe - The Hollies

The Beatles

The Mamas & the Papas

Fleetwood Mac

I went to Amazon and looked at 60's and 70's compilations and soundtracks for ideas. For Frank Sinatra, try "In the Wee Small Hours". It's one of his best and it's all ballads.

25. You're welcome - thought of some others
Songs written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David like:

The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield
Wishin' & Hopin' - Dusty Springfield
I Say a Little Prayer - Dionne Warwick

Also, the whole soundtrack of the film The Commitments is really good. Wonderful covers of a lot of great soul songs.

It's one of his most bitter albums. Try "Songs For Swingin' Lovers".

Don't know the artist. It's 60s-70s, maybe Motown. That's the chorus above.
