Just what is a gipper anyway?
I hear the word 'gipper' and "smelly sardines" instantly come to mind.

Indeed, it adds even more meaning to my epithet of "The Smoked Gipper" about the dead doorknob.

6. Ron Reagan played George Gipp
in the movie "Knute Rockne, all American". Gipp (nicknamed 'The Gipper') played for Notre Dame Football, and died of an illness while still in college. During his last meeting with his coach (Knute), he allegedly said (and it was done in the movie) "Someday, when the luck is going against you, and all the breaks are going the other way, tell the team to go win for me. They'll do it." So, of course, Rockne would tell the team at half time when they were losing to go 'Win this one for the Gipper' and they would go on to win. Reagan, after playing the roll of Gipp, would forever be associated with the legend.
