Help, I'm having a panic attack - right now
Worst one in a long time.

I posted about it in the other panic attack thread but I'm ready to go to the hospital and i can't afford the time.

Can somebody talk me down?

1. what helps you?
I've had little episodes where I felt kind of manic. Usually, lying down and closing my eyes makes them go away. Breathe deeply and slowly. A hot bath?

6. I'm at work
Here's what happened:

Looking through several boxes of papers trying to find one - no luck.

Looking through back threads on a tech site for something - no luck.

Looking through some source code for a problem - no luck.

Suddenly I'm hyperventilating with chest pains, rocking, foot-tapping ready to punch something.

Could also be something about my new office - I ddidn't get tese as often in my old office.

18. I hear Benadryl has anti-anxiety properties.
Not that I would ever recommend taking any drug, since I'm not a doctor; and because doctors can prescribe better and cheaper.

3. If it is cool there - go outside and breath cool air
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 05:43 PM by molly
get yourself to a doctor and have him prescribe Effexor.

on edit - lie down - curl up in the fetal position - close your eyes - cold air helps but if you start to hyper - breath into a paper bag - deep breaths.

8. Right
Lie down and close your eyes. Concentrate on each group of muscles, starting with your face. Make yourself relax them. Then move onto the next set of muscles. If one set becomes tense again, go back to that.

7. Well, consider getting away from your computer...
Call a friend or family member and just ask to meet for a cup of decaf or maybe a drink or a chocolate milkshake. A real-life person is going to be more helpful than a bunch of us virtual friends in a politics-soaked environment like DU.

Good luck.

9. I suffer from this....
.....what can I do to help? Try this maybe:

Is there someone you can call on the phone? I have a close friend and when this is coming on, he will talk me down. What he does is count backwards from 10 to 1 and tell me that at each number I am getting calmer and that I am safe. Makes me breath real deep and exhale with each number. It works better in person when this happens, but try to do this for yourself. And remember: You actually are safe. Even tho you do not know what you are threatened by at this very moment, you are safe. Go to a safe place for you and think "calm." And try to relax your muscles and hear a soft voice telling you that it is OK, you are SAFE. Breath in and out slowly and close your eyes.

Hope this helps. Unfortunately, I know just how you feel.

11. Get a bag and breathe into it NOW
it helps with the hyper ventilating. DONT drink any caffeine, that adds to it. Pace, walk, go outside. FOCUS on something. Keep busy doing something. Call someone, talk to them, talk therapy is good.
exercise, and remember it will pass.
I know what you are going thru. Your blood sugar might be screwy!! eat if you are hungry...sleep if you are tired, lonely? call a friend, angry? talk it out
HALT....usually I have panic attacks when Hungry, angry, lonely, tired.
DONT read breaking news or general discussion...too much stress
Try a bath..
Post your angst on here if you need to!!
I know how it feels, believe me

16. Breathe through your nose
That's the most relaxing breathing you can do - simulates sleep.
