Are the LOTR deluxe box sets worth it?
I don't own any of the movies yet. The box DVD sets are $27 at Costco. Is all the extra stuff worth it? And are the extra 3 discs different between the first and second movie?

1. $27 sounds like a bargain.
If you like the movies, I'd buy them.

2. I'm waiting for the combined set
of the complete extended DVDs of the 3 movies with all the extras. Due out I think in Dec. sometime.

I think the extras a worth it, generally. But I'm a film buff.

Though for ROTK I read that that DVD out now only has two little documentaries on it... waiting for the one in Dec.

3. Totally worth it
The added scenes are neat and add a lot to the story as far as I'm concerned. And the documentaries are good.

4. Absolutely worth it!!
And yes, the extra discs - two in each set - are different in each set, and are really good and informative.

But mostly, get the deluxe versions just so you can have the much longer films. Brilliant!

And annoying as it will be, because it will mean more money, I hope that after the Return of the King deluxe edition is out, Jackson will then work on a superdeluxe version, and add in another hour or more of extra footage, and make a 14-15 hour bonanza version.

There's still a lot of scenes he filmed that haven't made it even into the deluze versions.

Go Jackson go!!

8. Thanks for the info
I think I'll pick them up this week. $27 seemed pretty reasonable for a 4 disc set. I just hope they still have them in stock.

9. Yes they're worth it
the hard part is actually finding 4 hours to watch one of them. I'm holding out for the extended version again, as I have on the previous two movies. Should be out right around Thanksgiving most likely.

11. Yes--great commentaries, conceptual art, special features--get them!
Much better than simply buying the theatrical version.

12. Yes, they are definitely worth it.
They have fuller versions of the movies, on 2 disks since several commentary tracks are also included. I'm really looking forward to the Extended ROTK since I thought there was some choppy editing & a few continuity problems on the Theatrical version. However, some people complained that it was too long, so I can see why the cuts were made.

Then there are the 2 disks of supportive material. Not only are the supplemental disks different for each movie, but they don't repeat the (scanty) stuff included with the Theatrical editions.

A 3-movie set of the Theatrical editions is out already. I have seen no official announcement of a 3-movie Extended set.

Maybe when PJ is done with King Kong he'll think about a super-extended edition. I think he needs a break from Middle Earth for a while.

FotR - definitely worth it
TTT - did nothing special for me beyond what the theatrical release did

What I do enjoy about both is the extended versions seem to have (slightly) more vidid color palettes than the theatrical DVDs.

14. They put back in what we LOTR purists complained was left out
so, if you're a big fan of the books, as I am, the theatrical releases are far too abbreviated; the extended editions are where it's at!

ROTK is on my XMAS list again this year, just as the previous two movies were on my list the last two years. I don't know WHAT the hell I'll ask for next year! I'm going to go through LOTR withdrawal this December, with no new LOTR movie at the Cinerama!

15. yes, they are worth it.
the extended versions have about 30-35 minutes of extra scenes that flesh out many of the things in the book not seen in the theatrical versions. these scenes add to the story and make the films better.

in FOTR the scenes where the film opens with the broad shot of the shire and where galadriel's gifts are given are worth the discs alone.

the commentary tracks with actors, director/writers, pre & post production unit personnel are great and to listen to the actors comment on what went on while making the fims show how much those actors enjoyed each other, and it shows on the screen their own fellowship in making the films.

the other discs in these offers also give a unique perspective to what went in to making the films.

16. I bought them at lunchtime
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 01:01 PM by bif
Now to find the time to watch them. I'm a huge fan of the books--read them a couple times back in high school. I've only seen bits and pieces of the movies because the books were so incredible, I was afraid the movies would spoil it for me. But my kids loved them so AI'm ready to dig in.
