Any musicians here that record on their PC?
I'm a guitarist that worked with boards and rack gear for years. Now i'm diving into the world of PC recording. I have much to learn. Any recommendations?

2. I've been having good luck with Real Player paid version
There's a record function. I've been using it dump all by reel-to-reel tapes and LP's to disk.

I'm going to be recording live on Thursday and I'm seriously contemplating lugging my PC with me rather than using tape.

4. I've tried, but I'm a slave to analog...
I have cakewalk and a very good soundcard and have started to use them several times...but I always find myself saying, "What in the hell am I doing? I have amps, mikes, a kit and a multi-track in the other room"

Maybe one day :)

5. my so does and gets really interesting results
not sure what he uses. Very trancey and dancey stuff. I think he has a variety of different programs. I have only ever recorded on boards in studios myself, but the PC way seems more egalitarian and cheaper.

6. Quite a bit

I am still using ADATS to lay down and store tracks, but am dumping the tracks into a computer I built specifically as a DAW (digital audio workstation)for editing and mixing.

I have tried several different softwares, but my favorite is Cool Edit Pro, ahich is now called Adobe Audition since Adobe bought them out. It is the most user-friendly software I have found so far.

For audio work, you want either an Athlon or Pentium 4 processor. the Celerons and Durons really don't cut it because of the number crunching involved. 256 megs of RAM is marginal, 512 up is better an you want a 7200 rpm. or better hard drive.

The quality of the A/D convertors is important. Soundblaster cards and the like are consumer grade and really don't have the quality of convertors that audiophile or professional grade cards do. I am using the convertors in the ADATS, so all I needed was an ADAT "lightpipe" card to take them in as digital signal.

Anyway, I was able to do away with all my rack processing gear etc. and do it all "in the box".

good luck!
