World War II Memorial registry
Edited on Mon May-31-04 11:41 AM by nuxvomica
Here's a link to the main page of the World War II Memorial registry:
http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp&subpage=intro

You should be able to find the name of any one of the 400,000 Americans who gave their lives during that war. I looked up my uncle Joe's name and all that was listed was his rank (PFC), name, ID #, branch of service, home county and status (DOW or "died of wounds"). But the site gives you the opportunity to add more detail, including a picture, to the "Registry of Remembrances". So I've got my dad working on putting the info together on my Uncle Joe and we're looking for a good picture to scan.

My uncle died from a shrapnel wound taken while crossing a river on the Franco-German border. He had picked up a buddy who was more seriously wounded than he and carried him to a medic. Uncle Joe wasn't badly wounded but he wasn't treated with penicillin and the wound became infected, eventually killing him. My grandmother heard the story from the guy my uncle helped to save.

So if you know someone who died in that war, check out this site. If you can flesh out any of the official info or add a photo, go ahead and do it. They don't have to be a relative or even someone you knew personally. They shouldn't be forgotten.

edit: note that the official databases list only the war dead, the "Registry of Remembrances" is for anyone who served in any way.

1. I know its not conclusive whether me and Mike are related but he's there

We may not be related but he is my hero none the less, RIP my fallen Slovak brethen :(.
Thanks btw nux, I appreciate this. Most of my close relatives lived to see better days but many of my granddad's brothers died too young after the war. Plus we have that Slovene relative who was killed.
RIP Mike and all.
I think in that picture of Strank, I see myself a little, I am not being sarcastic, i know I dont look mostly like him, and he was smaller than me weightwise.

3. I know what you mean, Kleeb
You don't have to be related to someone to make a connection. In that picture, I see a guy who's young and scared but thoughtful and resolute nonetheless. For a hero, you could do worse. ;-)

4. he wasn't even a citizen
Well he's my brother in that we're Slovaks :). Plus I think I resemble him somewhat. The book James Bradley wrote about Mike and the other guys is also one of the things that makes me think of my godmother, who gave my grandma the book to let me borrow but then she died, its something that makes me think of her and the town of Johnstown, Pa forever.

6. You're welcome
And your post reminded me that you can register anyone who served in World War II, not just the fallen.

8. They will come up in a search if somebody registered them
Otherwise, the official databases only list the war dead. My dad isn't listed because he survived but I could register him anyway. There are people listed who worked in factories stateside but, like I said, they had to be deliberately registered by someone.

11. Maybe someone in your family knows
Maybe you could register them yourself, if you collect the data.

9. Thanks
I was only 7-years old when my uncle William Kinney departed to serve. He and my aunt had only been married for a short time but he immediately became my favorite uncle. The house was always filled with laughter when he was around. I have always remembered the day my aunt received notice that uncle Bill had died and 10-years ago shortly before she died she gave me the flag that she had received.

12. Thanks for sharing your memories
The site reminds me of the Ellis Island site because you can sort of reach through time and connect with someone in the past. :-)
