Didn't know the show existed... I agree with the Monkees' comment but there's a lot of other shrewd postings as well.

Here's one comment or two:

Could you imagine trying to get the top performing artists of today all together on the same show today on a regular basis? It would be impossible unless you promised them all awards. It was the good old days before the recording industry got greedy and jaded.

and

In this greedy world we live in today, it would costs millions of dollars to duplicate the show of Don Kirshner. The groups would probably want a high sum to play for a few songs.

1. Showing my age here (HS at the time)
It was fantastic--every Friday night I'd wait for m&d to hit the sack then I'd tune in. I was introduced to punk by DKRC when I saw the New York Dolls.

Anyone know if there are VHS or DVDs out there? The youngsters ought to know what they are missing . . .

Actual fond TV memories....staying up late as a kid and watching Rock Concert and Midnight Special (with Wolfman Jack). I got to see real bands actually playing their instruments, instead of just hearing their songs as soundtracks to frenetic music videos. Those shows probably had as much influence as anything else on my musical tastes -- and they definitely saved me from disco!

I wish they were available on DVD.

edit: still can't spell
