Hit rock songs sung by a band member who was NOT the lead singer:
Edited on Sat May-29-04 07:33 PM by northwest
The only ones I can think of (and stupidly, I forgot the titles) were that 1978 Aerosmith song sung by Joe Perry that went "Sing with me, sing for the years, sing for the laughter, sing for the tears..." and that one song by The Cars in 1986 or so that went "Who's gonna drive you home... Tonight?..."

Can anyone think of other ones??? "Atwa" by System Of A Down was sung by Daron Malakian, but that wasn't a hit song in the rock charts, it was just another song in the Toxicity album (which all of it KICKED ASS anyway). "Marigold" by Nirvana was sung by Dave Grohl, but it was a B-Side song.

And also, "Prison Sex" by Tool was sung by their original lead singer (before Maynard James Keenan), who's name I forgot.

32. Well, if we're gonna talk Beatles songs, how about "My Bonnie"
Their first single, and the one that got them their manager Brian Epstein. Sung by a guy named Tony Sheridan.

Not sure how big of a hit the song was, but Epstein's record shop got several requests for the single - which led him to the Cavern Club to hear the band play. And the rest, as they say, is history.

So it's the hit that spawned every other Beatles hit, literally.

30. Happy was a fairly big hit in the summer of 72
Probably the biggest commercial hit sung by Keith, but "You Got The Silver", "Before They Make Me Run", and "Little T&A" are all solid as well. And he's done plenty of others.

Edited on Sat May-29-04 07:53 PM by Beaker
were both sung by My Favourite Monkey- Mickey Dolenz...when it was little davey jones that was billed as the lead singer.

BTW- did you know that David Bowie originally performed & recorded under the name Davie Jones, but had to switch to Bowie after the Monkees started getting big.

Though that wasn't actually "singing". Well, neither was "Mother" I guess.

But neither song was really a "hit"

37. "Drive" by The Cars was sung by bass player Ben Orr
He did lead vocals on other songs, but I think it is fair to say that Ric Ocasek was the "lead singer."

"Drive" was the band's biggest hit.

May Ben rest in peace.

41. I believe that would be Blondie Chaplin
Who in more recent years has been touring as a backup singer with the Stones. What's amazing is that it sounded more like a real Beach Boys song than any of that Kokomo crap, or anything Bruce Johnston ever did.
