US presidential hopeful John Kerry becomes King of the "Cheeseheads"

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) has joined the ranks of the "Cheeseheads," the devoted group of American football fans who love Wisconsin's Green Bay Packers.

Kerry has become a devotee of the National Football League's Packers and a backer of quarterback Brett Favre in hopes they will bring him luck.

In the past 18 US presidential elections, the final pre-election result of the national capitol's gridiron team, the Washington Redskins, has been an accurate forecaster of the presidential election result that followed.

When the Redskins win, the incumbent remains in the White House. When the Redskins lose or draw, the man in the White House is voted out.
