Come on you Godless communists this will be good for you....okay we will now sing Holy! Holy! Holy! and we put it in a form easy for you "non regular members" to follow-none of that sing across and then skip down to the next line under the notes that no one really understands.

1. Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
our song shall rise to Thee;

Come on jump in it's just like Row Row Row your boat except it's not only fun but can save from eternal damnation.

Okay...

2. I Love That Hymn!
It's one of my favorites.

I hope this isn't yet another Christian-bashing thread. Now we're attacking sacred music?

7. Yep, that's what it's called
Main Entry: sa·cred
Pronunciation: 'sA-kr&d
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from past participle of sacren to consecrate, from Old French sacrer, from Latin sacrare, from sacr-, sacer sacred; akin to Latin sancire to make sacred, Hittite saklAi- rite
1 a : dedicated or set apart for the service or worship of a deity <a tree sacred to the gods> b : devoted exclusively to one service or use (as of a person or purpose) <a fund sacred to charity>
2 a : worthy of religious veneration : HOLY b : entitled to reverence and respect
3 : of or relating to religion : not secular or profane <sacred music>

5. Not the way I play them
They're supposed to be a brisk walking tempo (with some minor exceptions). Many organists take them too slow, theoretically to have pity on the congregation. In fact, the congregration is better served with a fast tempo so they're not breathing every other bar and hyperoxygenating.

6. Hymn 43
That's my favorite hymn. From Ian Anderson's antireligion hymnal.

9. So where do I find "Hymn 43"??
superb lyrics and brilliant acoustic, flute-oriented music mixed with a discussion of Christian hypocrisy is all that I recall of Jethro Tull and Aqualung. Tull is one of the few 70's groups I still listen to.

But I am not "into" music these days - or indeed post-Vietnam.

So where do I find "Hymn 43"??

Sounds like something I should listen to!

:-)

10. and this rocking classic from martin luther, the king of hymn'n'roll
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternate translation:

A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from every need that hath us now overtaken.
The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight; on Earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is.
Of Sabbath Lord, and there’s none other God;
He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us.
We tremble not, we fear no ill, they shall not overpower us.
This world’s prince may still scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none, he’s judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it;
He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life, goods, fame, child and wife,
Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won;
The Kingdom ours remaineth.
