Does anyone here smoke a pipe?

on edit:forgot to answer why I smoke a pipe.I enjoy the taste and smoke a lot less than when I used cigarettes. I rarely finish a bowlful in a setting..........

How does one make that decision? You don't see very many pipe smokers. How did you start?

11. The first pipe

was a gift from a girlfriend who said that she thought I was the pipe "type".

(Long blonde hair and mustache, ragged clothes, standing in the middle of a campus square with a BULLHORN!) That's a pipe type?

Anyway, I kept with it and became a habit of having something to do with my hands.......I think I'm more addicted to the tactile stimulation than the tabacco. Seriously!

the general concensus. . . better than cigarettes. I've always wondered about pipe smokers. My godfather smoked one and I loved the way he smelled. But I don't run into many these days.

7. I decided I needed a vice.

Seriously. I didn't drink. I didn't womanize. I didn't steal. Would have been a great boy scout. So I decided I needed some vice to define myself. Thought of the various sorts, and settled on pipe smoking as sufficuently viceful, yet not as harmful to my lungs as smoking.

Probably smoked it a couple dozen times. But it always felt like an affectation. Finally gave it up when I decided I just plain hated how it made my mouth taste.

Still love the smell of unsmoked pipe tobacco, or the smell of a pipe being smoked in the distance. Not so great up close.

the reason?

the ritual. from flipping open a bag of tobacco to grabbing a pinch (complete with the wonderful aroma of fresh tobacco) to tamping it in the bowl, to the lighting process to the act of smoking itself, even blowing a few smoke rings while you're at it. all very relaxing. plus it greatly enhances book reading and listening to jazz music...

add to that the slight buzz and you've got a very rich experience.

15. Been smoking one since high school

Always thought it looked pretty cool, and I always loved the smell of pipe tobacco, and then I got into Sherlock Holmes...and, well, next thing you know I'm buying a pipe.

Then as I smoked it, and started exploring actual good tobacco (not that shit you buy in a drugstore, etc.), I really came to enjoy it. I love the slowness of it - much like a cigar, there's a lot of ritual to the preparation and lighting of the thing, and in taking care of the tobacco (keeping the humidor at the proper humidity) and also one has to make a commitment to it: a pipe, and a cigar, lasts for a long time.

A cigarette is immediate - an immediate hit of nicotine, and then in 6 minutes it's gone and done. My favorite pipes, and my favorite cigars, take about an hour. Smoking them gives me permission to slow down, and forces me to slow down, and enjoy it, be aware of myself and my surroundings, and they help conversation. Really, they do - the slowness of the process forces my brain to slow down, to become more deliberate, and in that slowing down actually become more focused and able to be more intelligent.

My pipes, as with my guns, my books, my artwork, and my cooking pans, will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands.

21. For twelve years... Started as a joke

but I liked it and have continued. My father was a pipe smoker, so that may have something to do with it. But "Bob" Dobbs was an influence, as well. I am a "stem biter". I have dozens of perfectly good pipe bowls which I can't use because I've chomped through the stems. I can't seem to master smoke rings, which is a constant frustration. Ah, well.

Hmm. Yvonne Craig writes that she tried to take up smoking a pipe.

I favor Captain Black Gold tobacco. Too much of it, actually.

I dont smoke very often. (once or twice a month) however, I will have to find a new tobacconist when I move to Stevens point, and a compatible tobacco for the tobacco that I do smoke.
