41. Oh you did NOT.
NEVER EVER rag on Aphex Twin, or you request Such a Beating. :-)

I think the album with "You Went to See Dishwalla and Everclear -- You're Gay" on it is I Like It When You Die. I might be wrong, however.

Picnic of Love is the hilarious album consisting entirely of what sound like Bon Jovi acoustic b-sides, such as "I Respect Your Feelings as a Woman and a Human" and "Saving Ourselves for Marriage." It's something you have to hear to believe, really.

-C

Note -- I hate Bon Jovi.

8. You got some gooduns there.
Revolver, Loveless, London Calling, Closer, What's Going On, Exile -- all easily top-100 for me (though there's no way in hell I'd ever wanna try and formalize a top-100 list).

But I do like "Rubber Soul" better than "Revolver," and prefer both "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" and "Man Who Sold the World" to "Low." Mere quibbles, really, when talking about artists such as Bowie and the Beatles.

Oh, and of course his number one will be "Double Nickles on the Dime," even though everyone knows "What Makes a Man Start Fires" is a far superior record.

37. Agreed on "What Makes a Man Start Fires"
My old band used to cover "Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs." We played it when we opened for Watt (usually a faux pas to cover the headliner, but once in a lifetime shot, you know?) and The Man, The Myth, The Mike was kind enough to autograph my vinyl copy of "Double Nickels on the Dime" that I've had since high school in the '80s. That was easily one of the coolest fucking days of my life.

Also, fuck pre-Gillard Guided By Voices.

28. Hurrah for "Trompe le Monde!"
That and "Bossanova" are unfairly maligned by Pixies fans. Hell, I like 'em both better than "Doolittle" or "Come on Pilgrim."

A lot of folks didn't like that the last 2 Pixies albums didn't sound like the first 3. For that matter, Frank Black lost a lot of sales in the early days because he didn't sound like the Pixies.

That's the BEST thing about the Pixies -- they EVOLVED.

36. Charles stopped writing songs about the Old Testament...
...and started writing songs about aliens. Big deal.

Oh, and they brought in Eric Drew Feldman to play keys.

The funny thing is, it really WASN'T a departure. The Pixies were still the Pixies, it was the environment that had changed. Nirvana had broken, and Kurdt Cobain's dream was to remake "Surfer Rosa." The POP IDIOM by 1991 had shifted to Pixies circa '88! Therefore, as they had gone forward, the milieu had gone back; and they had become, once again, just like Billy Pilgrim, unstuck in time.

It's not an invalidation based upon Dead-hatred (can't stand 'em, but there's plenty on my list other people cant' stand), but based upon the fact that BOOTS DON'T FUCKIN' COUNT! and in no way is that an "album" by any accepted standard. If he woulda listed one of the "Dick's Picks" series, those are albums. Even better, if he chose Zappa's "Beat the Boots" stuff. But he didn't. And therefore, the list is invalid.

Sheesh, I thought I was being generous by not yelling at people who posted "greatest hits" comps. ;)

Okay, lose the Dead boot; to replace it:

Soul Junk- 1953

Great band; have you heard 'em before?

But shit, I'd rather listen to "Killer Queen" than a 26-minute version of "Dark Star" any day.

Don't worry, you won this contest; there's no way you can dis the Pixies or Miles Davis without inviting the wrath of the DU hip squad, who apparently also think Franz Ferdinand is a good band.

Ain't you the one who always says "I like more music than I dislike," and ain't I the one who always says "everything sucks?"

C'mon, FF is a good band. They are NOT, however, a memorable band. They're a good band amid a sea of good bands; and I'm far more interested in the GREAT bands.

60. I just can't stand hype.
And I can't stand spontaneously generated consensus opinion; when immediately dozens of people say some band is great and immediately they get a feature review in MOJO and immediately they're getting publicity everywhere and they've only played like 30 shows, I don't think, "well, jeez, thjey must be good!" I think, "jeez, their record company is really working overtime to promote this band."

Remember Hipsway? Sigue Sigue Sputnik? The Strokes? We are Going To Eat You? Gay Dad? Menswe@r? Franz Ferdinand will go the way of all these bands; they're nine-day wonders. Fucking British music press.......

And yes, for every band or artist I say I hate, I can name ten I really dig. So it's not like I'm some crank bellowing in the woods.

And don't you forget it.

P.S. I fucking can't stand Everclear. The band, that is. Goddamned well hate 'em. "Everclear," the AMC album was damn good, though. Everclear the booze is an abomination unto God. I hope I have cleared up the Everclear confusion between us.

There's so much hype surrounding this band, there's no WAY they could be that good. I've heard 'em.....They're okay; just okay. the goddamn British music press takes these above average-but not excellent- bands and inflates them into "the second coming of _______" and then you hear 'em and you're like "Jeez, they sound like Pavement crossed with the Strokes, the lyrics are the same old impressionistic nonsense, the singer sounds bored, and the guitar player uses a chorus pedal sometimes." BFD.

Meanwhile, in the power-pop underground, there's thousands of bands who are inventive, have singers who can sing, capable instrumentalists, and facile songwriting, but the press shuns them because they're "retro."

YES, I'M A CRANKY OLD MAN AT THE TENDER AGE OF 29.

I'd rather listen to Everclear (the band) than Franz Ferdidnand; there's simply more going on there. It's all subjective anyways......

I'm listening to the Buzzcocks right now.

Actually I like Frank Black's solo stuff more than I like the Pixies. I think he really came into his own as a vocalist and songwriter after he left the band.

Lightning Bolt....whew! Still haven't seen 'em live, still DYING to see 'em live. It's funny how much they sound like Space Streakings, though.

Wow, they were really somethin'! Since that first Unteberger book came out, I've been searching high and low for more Mystic Tyde (and Martin Newell).

Too bad that "Urban Spacemen" follow-up book was so mediocre (except for the Randy Holden chapter)

67. Dig it...very creepy stuff.
I'd been searching for that album since I was a teenage Zappa freak.

Believe it or not, I actually like the Nico MORE than the Henske-Yester! I totally avoided Nico for so long since I hate that first VU album (Sorry, I think it's unintentionally funny, esp. Nico's songs), but man, did she ever improve! She can actually SING on Marble Index; who'da thunk it? And the backing is exquisite.

Thanks for that CD...nothing beats listening to Nico drone on about shipwrecks and skeletons on a warm sunny spring day.

72. Don't forget the dragonfly.
VU & Nico is probably my least favorite VU record. I certainly don't hate it, but I do find it to be WAY overrated. After that and "Chelsea Girls," though, who woulda thought Nico could write her own songs? GOOD songs? And those avant-Cale arrangements are suhweet!

The last song on the H/Y album is one of my favorite songs ever. About 2 minutes in, when Jerry's voice gets all distorted, and he's droning on about how "Alpha Centauri, it is too far to come to die" or whatever he's saying... damn!

64. Change that Serge Gainsbourg to...
"Aux Armes Et Caetera"...

A top 20, with no "electronica"...and in no order.

Jimi Hendrix - Axis:Bold as Love
The Beatles - White Album
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Beck - Mellow Gold
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Primus - Pork Soda
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Miles Davis - Walkin
Thelonious Monk - Misterioso
Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Negativland - Escape From Noise
Led Zeppelin - II
Faith no More - Angel Dust
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate

Pretty tough to choose actually...i tried not include anything industrial or any electronica (I guess Massive Attack would be "electronica")...

but yeah...there you go...

68. I didn't really know how to choose a favorite SY record...
Along with quite a few artists on there...

Like regardless of what theProfessor might say (although Rubber SOul is an excellent album) I dunno how to choose a favorite Beatles record, or a favorite Pink floyd record, or Miles and so on..

The only two I'm really sure on are Beastie Boys-Paul's Boutique and Hendrix-Axis. those two works speak to me personally more than the rest of those artist's respective works...Oh and add Angel Dust on there (I like it more than other FNM strictly for the production ...perhaps the best produced rock and roll record ever).

73. Y'know, I have to tip my hat to "Angel Dust's" production as well.
I wouldn't rank the album as highly as you do (I find the second side to be kinda dull), but it does sound great.

It certainly doesn't hurt that hundreds of bands most people think are "better" than FNM never recorded a song half as good as "Land of Sunshine," either.
