Think about it. What's so "liberal" about what Hollywood puts out to public?

The biggest box office stars: Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, The Rock, Stallone, etc... are republicans. The movies that make the most money are almost always violent ass, shoot 'em up, bomb, explosions, bloody corpse, death, murder, kill stuff. The women are usually airheads that always fuck things up - there's rampant homophobia O-Rama - villains are usually dark in skin tone and on and on...

Yeah Hollywood is so liberal.

2. They tend more to reflect national mood and character
Hence increasingly shallow properties that cater to the lowest of lowest common denominators and periodic bouts of excess jingoism. It's all about money. Well, mostly.

And you've got to be careful in failing to distinguish actors from the roles that they play, a very common tendency -- not all of these action heroes that you list are Republicans.

Hollywood really is liberal to a great extent, even if it doesn't always show as producers seek to maximize the bottom line.

5. That's an extremely unrepresentative snapshot of "top box office stars"

That's an extremely unrepresentative snapshot of "top box office stars"
Also, The Rock has never said he's a republican I beleive. He did speak at the GOP convention though on behalf of or for "Rock the vote". Not that I doubt he's to the right, it's just never been backed up by anything. Also, I'm not sure about Stallone either. Again, probably sort of conservative, not necessarilly a proud republican.

Now as far as top grossing stars go, here's 2003s top grossing stars:

1 Jim Carrey: Probably somewhat liberal

2 Nicole Kidman: Probably liberal

3 Jack Nicholson: I believe he's a democrat

4 Tom Cruise: Known to be liberal, it was falsley reported he and Spielburg supported the war, and the RW press got people to believe the myth.

5 Julia Roberts: Probably liberal(Erin Brokovich?)

6 Johnny Depp: Definetly a liberal

7 Russel Crowe: Who knows?

8 Tom Hanks: A democrat

9 Will Ferrell: Probably somewhat liberal

10 Renee Zellweger: Who knows? I doubt she's conservative

In the year 2000 A bunch of them were in the top 10 and in addition there was

#3 George Clooney: Liberal democrat

#6 Mel Gibson: Socially he's a nutball conservative, but who knows if he's even a republican? He's certainly never been politically vocal for them that I know of.

#10 Harrison Ford: I believe he's to the left a bit, other than McCain he's supporter ALL democrats in donations

8. So what?
Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts was about a prostitute who finds her John in shining armor. Yeah, that so happens all the time. :eyes: There' seems to be plenty of movies featuring "nice" prostitutes... Leaving Las Vegas, Center of the World, 15 Minutes, etc. I guess prostitutes are a lot more interesting that regular boring broads. However, I doubt most people would want their daughters to grow to be a prostitutes.

Movies continue portraying derogatory stereotypes with regards to race, religion, sexual orientation, physical appearance and so on. A lot of stuff out of Hollywood is NOT liberal.

9. whoopdy-shit. I never said it's the left-wing propaganda machine that the
right makes it out to be but it's pretty clear that the entertainment media is dominated from the ground up by liberal people, because creative and artsy people tend to be liberal, it's just the way it is.

You've got to be honest, the news media is definetley a seperate non-liberal entity.

7. The whole argument is based
on the idea that the people who report the news are generally Democrats, which I'm sure isn't right, and if it is then it cannot be a vast majority.

The people who espouse this point of view ALWAYS, IN EVERY CASE, ignore the fact that large corporations (conservative by nature) control the final output and ultimate editorial decisions. But oh well, DAMN LIBERAL MEDIA, right? Right?

10. news is different than hollywood. Any credible person knows the news
is quite a different entity than Hollywood and is not a big pro-democrat medium on a whole.

12. Big difference between the US 'news' media and the Hollywood film/TV
industry.

For one thing, Hollywoopd films tend to be more true-to-life.

Edited on Tue May-25-04 01:53 AM by ForrestGump
And the corporations have just been getting bigger and bigger as they eat each other. It's pretty much Sony, Time-Warner-AOL, Fox, MGM, Disney, and Paramount, with a few smaller players like Dreamworks, Lucasfilm, etc.

EDIT: forgot Disney! How could I do that?

15. I think Disney owns Dreamworks
I might be mistaken. If they don't own them I think they probably give them most of thier contract work.

16. Pretty sure they don't
Like Pixar, Dreamworks has cooperated with Disney but they've also been savage adversaries. Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen don't let the Mouse push them around.

20. Hi everyone
:)
Hi everyone, I’m a newbe, And this is great.
This is one of the subjects I and the other few “Free Thinkers” on our local board are hammered on constantly.
I don't know what it is about these fascist, But this is one of there main gripes.
Especially Michael Moore these day’s, Ha ha....

They are so loud, And they will not let anyone other than their little band of nazis get a word in, It’s frustrating.
But that is why the DU is so great, Just wanted to say hi, And perhaps ask for advice on how we can take back our “Home” board.
