"This president doesn't listen to show tunes"
Can SOMEBODY tell me what is wrong with listening to show tunes?

Especially if its a man listening to them?

How the hell can that be a measure of someone's masculinity?

All of you guys who like showtunes, here's a big ole kiss. You rock!!!

4. * didn't say it. It was said of him
"It's been raining a lot and the topsoil is loose," the spokesman said. "You know this president. He likes to go all out. Suffice it to say he wasn't whistling show tunes."

5. The Houston Chronical is one of many sources:
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2587180

The quote came from "spokesman Trent Duffy"...Bush didn't say it.

"Duffy also noted that Bush is a sports enthusiast and said "he wasn't poking along, whistling show tunes" on his ride."

Draw your own conclusions.

3. I didn't see that quote either,
But it didn't seem to hurt Kennedy to listen to Camelot and Clinton was partial to Grease. Neither had their masculinity questioned. And neither had to premptively inavade another country to prove what a man they were!

can't get off to it.

Olivia Newton-John was darn near menopause and they had her playing a teenager? No willing suspension of disbelief for me there.

I seem to recall reading that the show was revised to include material from the movie.

Would also connect well to the various bushim's of his.

18. show tunes suck
The "music" is paint-by-numbers cheese at its worst.

That doesn't mean I think that the comment in question wasn't stupid, because it did come from the Bush people.

Still, I fucking hate Broadway and its lousy middlebrow pretensions. :puke:

Edited on Mon May-24-04 12:18 AM by saracat
I am insulted. I don't know what field you are in ,but I doubt you could even begin to imagine the talent and dedication that contributes to making Broadway an American institution. I don't insult anyone's profession.I don't take kindly to others, who as indicated by "middlebrow pretensions" remark, know nothing about the genre.

29. This is obviously
the opinion of a musical illiterate. And a anti intellectual reverse snob. You have a right to your opinion. It would behoove you to learn how express yourself in a less condesending manner as it does not play well from someone so ill informed.

32. THIS...coming from a male Cheerleader
As a former Football Player AND High School Musical Lead (Fiddler and Forum - YEAH, SO WHAT....I LIKE ZERO MOSTEL) All I can say is I've been around more Musical Performers with more bravery than our chickenhawk, cheerleader pResident.

I mean, we on the football team had a few choice things to say about male cheerleaders......particularly ones that weren't gymnasts.....

36. Not really
it was more about being a "rah rah" rather than playing ball, or running track or marching band or whatever. More a male/female role thing I suppose.

This was in the 70's and there wasn't much out-front homophobia because there wasn't much out-front Gay pride etc at the time. It was one of those things that wasn't ever brought up much.

38. Yes, a Football team.
Of course, we were 1-9, 2-8 and 2-8 the three years I played, maybe if we were more homophobic, we would have won more games. We usually just said asshole, douchebag, prick, loser or redneck.
