2. Dell is repuke, makes mediocre stuff. HP makes crap and Carly Fiorina...

hates American workers and openly speaks against them, saying no American is entitled to a job (this as she shoves more and more jobs overseas so she can fill her smelly billfold with more money.)

I'd buy IBM, but I'm more inclined to home-build a PC.

And I own five Macs and one PC.

Particularly, MacOS X is the second most reliable OS I have ever used, after BSD. And it is MUCH easier to use than BSD. Usually, when I need to run a Windows program, I simply use Virtual PC on the Mac rather than booting the Windows-2000 machine.

10. Would some E-Machine voter fill me in, please?

I am inching closer by the day to buying a new pc.

I'm looking for a budget pc, and I don't need everything to be the lastest, greatest.

If I could get something like an 2+gigs of power, 80gig hard drive, 512 RAM and maybe a cd burner, I'd be happy. (you'd cry if you knew what I was using right now)

Above all, I want something reliable, that's not going to freeze up or slow to a crawl when I ask it to play a video file. Dependable - that's what I want.

I was told to avoid E-Machines like the plague. I was told the same about Intel Celeron processors.

I am currently looking at an HP A500N, with an AMD processor @ 2.08gigs, 80gig. HD, 333mhz bus, 512 RAM (expandable to 2gig), CD burner and DVD drive. This is about $500.

I can get near the same specs, I believe, with E-Machines for $100 or so less. A hundred bucks is a lot to me, but I don't want to be looking for another computer six months from now.

Are E-Machines crap, or a good value?

If you wanna update it, guess what? You can't.

Everything's fused to the motherboard.

Last one I saw at Sam's had a big ad banner with shopping links on the desktop. Doesn't seem like all of them do, though. I think I'll pass.

If you really gotta go cheap, get a Compaq. Or have one built (better choice).

18. stay away from E-machines!!!

as a man who worked at Best Buy for 3 1/2 years... I will tell you, they suck. No, THEY SUCK! They use horrible components and we used to get so many of them back to us becuase the system just crashed or the hard drive failed or something else didn't work. If you are going to buy one, go Dell or Gateway or IBM. Ot build your own. It is fun :)

or find some dedicated geek friend who knows all about processors and motherboards to put a computer together from scratch.

The only thing you get with a brand name is some support line that is absolutely useless.

unless you are totally frightened of computers, you should really build your own. Much cheaper and you will learn a lot about how your computer functions and wont have to call tech support every time something pops up :)
