Why does it annoy people...
that I'm politically active, even though I can't vote yet? It seems to me, that for a society where we are taught that the younger generation must "step up to the plate," so to speak; that people would be happier to see minors interested in politics.

I've been wondering though. Could this be because I'm more politically informed then a large section of the adult population? Does it depress people to see (people) like me?

Your input is welcome...

3. Maybe the ones who are annoyed
are the ones who feel you're shaming them by being active. But don't let that stop you.

How old are you? I have two sons, ages 21 and 17, and the younger one is rather annoyed he won't be old enough to vote this year. The older one is paying attention to what's going on and will be voting.

There are at least several other young activists like you here on DU, and I'm very impressed when young people get involved. DO NOT let the old fogies discourage you.

4. I hope more people are active citizens...
Doesn't matter to me their age, color, race, or sexual orientation. In some levels it doesn't even matter what party or beliefs they hold. Just get involved and be active so this country can remain a democracy.

5. You mean here or at large?
It never changes. People now tell you that you'll grow up to see things as they do. When you're in your twenties, they'll say wait until you have a family to raise. When you have a family they'll say wait until you are forty. It never stops. People who don't have facts will use whatever they can to dismiss your views.

You might have more of an effect than you think, though. I changed a few minds when my predictions at fifteen started coming true. And I've got some friends now who are in their early twenties who are some of the best campaign workers I know. They will be great candidates, or campaign managers, or just informed voters because they were active from an early age.

So don't sweat it. Just remember when someone dismisses you because you can't even vote yet, they are really just trying to find a way out of a losing argument. If they had facts, they would have used them.

6. Is it only Republicans who express annoyance?
If so, your age is only an excuse, much like Kerry's, say, expensive haircut.

7. It is wonderful you are active
I wish more were like you. I'm thinking you probably get your bad reactions from those who know the least about politics. Is that correct? Those who are more knowledgeable would be happy you are interested. Even if you don't agree, you can have a lively discussion about topics. I think you are on to something though. The older population might feel threatened by someone being more concerned with the world than they are, even when they can't vote. They see someone doing things they know they should, and feel guilty for not caring enough.

Whatever the reasons, don't let it stop you.
