Some perspective on a WORLD RECORD
Edited on Fri May-21-04 02:54 PM by underpants
I started really running again this week and to help motivate myself I picked up a copy of Runner's World. In it there was an article about Haile Gebrselassie who is trying to do the unimagineable in Athens-win three 10K Olympic races in a row (read the link below for his incredible accomplishments)

http://www.time-to-run.com/news/2004/jan/210104.htm

Okay so the world record is (26:22.75) that is (dropping the .75) 1,582 seconds. 100 meters is basically equal to 110 yards-from a football goalline to the BACK of the opposite endzone.

A meter is 1.0934 yards

So he ran 100 meters in 15.82 seconds. The fastest American football players (in shorts) run 4.4o second 40 yard dashes. 100 meters is = 2 3/4 40 yard dashes. Multiply the 4.4 X 2.75 and it is 12.10 seconds.

Haile was running about 4 seconds slower than the fastest football player running 100 meters-- 40 yards at a time.

BUT

Haile ran 100 100 meter races IN A ROW!

100 X 100=10,000.
