Best Metal Album of all time
Ok evilDUers, time to decide...which is the best metal album of all time?

My vote goes to "Reign in Blood" by Slayer. This disc is just freakin' sick- 10 songs in less than 30 minutes. Greatest thrash album ever!

1. I would have to agree. It would be hard to top that....
Other albums may be more evil, or faster, or heavier. But that album combines all of them in one big ball of molten metal.

Other contendors in my opinion are:

Iron Maiden: Number of the Beast
Judas Priest: British Steel
Metallica: Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets
Mercyful Fate: Melissa
Napalm Death: Scum (this may be more thrash or crossover than pure metal, but still).
Megadeth: Killing Is My Business

7. Oh, I forgot
Judas Priest - any
Anthrax - Fistful of Metal
Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying (still one of the greatest bass lines ever recorded).
Grim Reaper - See You in Hell

C'mon feel the noise, girls rock your boys.
And get wild wild wild
Wild wild wild.

Really, have there ever been better lyrics?

No seriously, Metallica, Master of Puppets.

4. It's up there
I still remember when I first bought "Reign in Blood". I knew enough to hide it from my mom. When the sound first came through my speakers, I thought "Holy crap, this is heavy stuff".

Others on my list

Metallica - Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz (with the late, great Randy Rhodes)
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast (Bruce Dickenson's voice!)

Especially because of but not limited to, their ridiculous hair metal past which they try to completely cover up.

25. Hey, to each their own....
I have liked and listened to any and all forms of heavy/fast music for the past 20 years. But Pantera has always been, even in their revisionist days, completely laughable to me. I guess I just never "got it" because I know a lot of people with otherwise impeccable taste who like that band.

For my money Sheer Terror mined the same metal/punk/neanderthal hybrid in a much better and much wittier way.

well, that analogy clearly doesn't work for me personally but you get the idea.

In order:

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power (it was downhill after that)
Megadeth Peace Sells but who's buying? Rust In Peace
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Very funny it is too. Written in one day, recorded the next day, mixed the third day. 22 songs in 29 minutes.

BOC has certainly put out many better ones.

Mind you, if we're talking about any album, including collections, then I pick "Workshop of Telescopes."

The post in which I answered "Imaginos" was a certain timeframe, and was limited to metal albums during a time so bad for metal that some people answered "Bon Jovi."

32. No, no, no...
...but compared to the rest of the drivel that was being released at the time, "Imaginos" looked good. Christ, just having "Siege and Investiture..." on the album made it better than the overwhelming majority of the "metal" albums released within a year either way. Remember, a whole lot of crap came out back then.

Surfer Rosa, The Pixies
Soundgarden, Ultramega OK
Hairway to Steven, Butthole Surfers

-Bad:
Tour de France 1988, John Tesh
Faith, George Michael
Appetite for Destruction, Guns -n- Roses
Kick, INXS (What happened, they used to be good)
Tiffany, Tiffany

I guess your right. Compared to the bad, "Imaginos" does'nt sound near as bad.

In fact, I'm personally insulted by this flagrant nu-metal tag, off with your head!

Even the new 'metal' is weak, Damage Plan, hailed as the second coming puts out a laaame first track because they know they have to sucker the watered down masses in to get sales.

Am I showing my age?

I always thought it quite ironic (and I don't think I'm betraying military secrets here...I've been out for almost 2 decades now)

that my SECRET PASSWORD to the NUCLEAR AREA of the base was "IronMaiden".

It was kind of a fun act of Secret Rebellion of the kind that was so pleasant in the Days of the Old Republic where REAL REBELLION was a "Red Dawn Fantasy" instead of the frightening option the Busheviks are slowly forcing us into today...

I didn't know of MegaDeth back then (they may not have existed yet) or THEY would have been my passowrd after hearing "Launch the Polaris"

By the Bye...honorable mention--Best Metal Album of all Time...

Megadeth's "Rust in Peace"

56. Here's 11
(In honor of Spinal Tap of course)

1. Metallica - "...And Justice For All". That was the peak of a brilliant string of albums beginning with the debut - after that, they sucked royal starting with the sell-out 'black album' (speaking of Spinal Tap).

2. Morbid Angel - "Blessed Are The Sick". The BEST death metal album ever, period. This album changed my life for the better.

3. Slayer - "Reign In Blood". Unlike Metallisoft, these guys never sold out and their current stuff holds up well without a whiff of compromise. This turned some bangin' heads in the mid-80's.

4. Black Sabbath - "Paranoid". This is where some serious seeds were planted, and no collection should be without it.

5. Sepultura - "Beneath The Remains". Brazil's finest export came out with this masterful effort at the end of the 80's, a prime time for underground metal subgenres.

6. Mercyful Fate - "Melissa". King Diamond's operatic range shames Freddie Mercury. Plus, the music isn't pretentious and overbearing. You can scare fundies away by cranking "Black Funeral".

7. Ozzy Osbourne - "Diary Of A Madman". His first two solo albums came close to eclipsing much of his Sabbath work. Had Randy lived......

8. Judas Priest - "Screaming For Vengeance". One of the very best metal bands to emerge from Sabbath's long shadow in the 70's and 80's. This is flawless.

9. Iron Maiden - "The Number of the Beast". Like Priest and Ozzy, in their prime in the early 80's. This is majestic and bold, with great chops all around.

10. Van Halen - "Fair Warning". Again with the early 80's classic albums. The last classic by VH, and although not purely metal, they influenced half the bands on this list, and rightfully so.

11. AC/DC - "Highway To Hell". The best example of how Chuck Berry really invented metal after all.

64. At the moment, I would say "Hostmorke" by Isengard
Edited on Sat May-22-04 01:39 AM by Tummler
...totally raw, bleak, and underground black metal with strong folk elements. The track "Thornspawn Chalice" is the single best black metal song ever. Isengard is a side project of one of the guys from Darkthrone (hailing from Norway, of course).

Nevertheless, depending on my mood and the position of the planets, I might instead choose any of the following essential albums that would round out my top 10:

At The Gates "Terminal Spirit Disease" (death metal, Sweden)
Dark Tranquillity "The Mind's I" (death metal, Sweden)
Dissection "The Somberlain" (black/death metal, Sweden)
Entombed "Clandestine" (death metal, Sweden)
Gorgoroth "Under the Sign of Hell" (black metal, Norway)
Macabre "Sinister Slaughter" (death/thrash metal, U.S.A.)
Paradise Lost "Gothic" (doom metal, U.K.)
Samael "Blood Ritual" (black metal, Switzerland)
Samael "Ceremony of Opposites" (black metal, Switzerland)

...or even one of the albums that would round out my top 20:

Cradle of Filth "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh" (black metal, U.K.)
Dark Tranquillity "The Gallery" (death metal, Sweden)
Dismember "Pieces" (death metal, Sweden)
Gorgoroth "Antichrist" (black metal, Norway)
Grave "Soulless" (death metal, Sweden)
Hypocrisy "Osculum Obscenum" (death metal, Sweden)
Impaled Nazarene "Ugra Karma" (black metal, Finland)
Septic Flesh "Ophidian Wheel" (death metal, Greece)
Slayer "Reign in Blood" (thrash metal?, U.S.A.)
Ulver "Nattens Madrigal" (black metal, Norway)

I could list dozens of other "honorable mention" albums, but since so few DUers (none, other than myself?) are seriously into black metal or death metal, I won't waste my time or yours.

75. Anything by Iron Maiden. Also a Rush fan, but they're not really metal.

Huge Iron Maiden fan here.

On edit:
Throw in the first couple solo Ozzy records, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman.
