another Computer techie question...

...I've downloaded several programs to install on my computer in the past hour. However, when I click on the Setup file, they won't start up! THe cursor turns into an hour-glass figure for a second, then it stops and nothing happens.

What does this mean? I've tried right-clicking and using the "open" feature. Same thing happens.

2. maybe
the software you're installing requires you to shut down your firewall, or virus software, or web browser. That's my guess.

7. Yes.
Try shutting down all the programs that you can, in systray, first. After that, hit ctrl, alt, del and shut down any anti-virus stuff.

4. Another Program Running In The Background
May be interfering. I have been using EndItAll2 for a couple of years now; it kills or closes everything not necessary to run your computer and it's a free download: http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

6. Are you sure they're done downloading?
:)

Well, I've done that before..tried to install programs that weren't done downloading.

They could be corrupt in some way. Re-download.

Restart and try to install again.

I'm out of my dumb suggestions. G'luck.

8. What is your Operating System
and have you Windows Updated lately to get all the latest patches?

What anti-virus software is running? Have its signatures been updated recently?

What is your connection? Cable? DSL?

Do you have any firewall software/hardware installed?

Have you updated recently?

12. Do the programs have .msi extensions?
If they do, you'll need to install the Windows Installer package before you can open them.

14. Take a look at the programs you're trying to install
If their names end with the .msi extension (someProgram.msi), then that's your problem. You won't have trouble installing ordinarily packaged programs, which come with an .exe extension. Win98 doesn't come with the Windows Installer (InstMsiA.exe) natively, so you have to add it.
