Her fastball has the equivalence of 100mph, but softball pitchers throw from 45 feet, as opposed to 60 feet from home plate.

Her fastball clocks at about 75 or 76 mph, but because of the shorter distance, it's as hard to hit as a 100+ mph fastball. This is even true of male softball pitchers.

The mass of the ball and the reduced leverage from the wrist throwing from underneath and the ball taking up more of the fingers prevents anybody from throwing a softball as fast as a MLB pitcher can throw a baseball. It's a matter of physics and physiology.

But, 75mph from 45 feet away has got to be scary, and pretty darned hard to hit.

perhaps because I am one. Played softball for 7 years in my teens. Didn't pitch though, played third base; was pretty good too ;-). I can also throw a football pretty damn well (most girls who grew up with brothers can). Got Frisbee down too. I'm sure I can still throw rocks well too, though I haven't done that since childhood.

It takes time for old stereotypes to vanish. There was a time when women didn't play sports and so it only made sense that we couldn't throw well (no practice), but women have been involved in sports in a major way for how long now? Kind of an outdated phrase if you ask me. Here's an idea for a replacement: He/she throws like Tim Russert.
