Head's up! The next big thing: Mindy Smith
Caught her video "Come to Jesus" on one of my very rare forays to CMT last night. She's sort of a cross between Fiona Apple and Mary Chapin Carpenter, if you can imagine. Very powerful voice; also insanely beautiful. I couldn't switch off, and as a cynical old fart I'm not usually enraptured about songs prominently featuring Jesus that are not ironical in intent. The second point above may have had something to do with this of course.
All you could possibly want to know about her here:

If you've been hearing a cover of "Jolene" lately, that's probably her.
What is it about Vanguard and signing Christians with brain function? (ie, her and Peter Case).

I'll try to keep an open mind, as Dolly's opinion carries some weight with me. I guess I should give her a listen, but based on appearance and marketing strategy, she looks like Nashville's answer to Avril Lavigne.

2. Vanguard any relation to National Vanguard
publishers of "The Turner Diaries" and other neo-nazi propaganda?

Just wondering.

3. Is Vanguard her record label? If so, no.
Vanguard is an EXTREMELY respected label; lots of outstanding folk and jazz, and a LONG history:
