Poll question: Scientist DUers: How many laypeople do you know?
I know we hate to associate with them, but they DO exist, even if they are just social parasites. How often do you stoop to speak with these inferior individuals?

6. I'm a medical scientist, but
there's a bunch of rocket scientists living in my neighborhood. In the morning they're all riding their bikes to the Jet Propulsion Lab. When we have block parties they're figuring out how to put 2-liter pop bottles into orbit using the hose and a bicycle pump. Buncha weirdos!

7. It's funny, but scientists tend to think all the OTHER scientists are the
weird ones. As chemists, we like to pick on the math and physics people. But we are the butt of most biologists' jokes.

8. Try being an archaeologist
Not "scientific" enough for many in the hard sciences, but not exactly loved among the social sciences either... :-)

9. Love the handle, Piltdown.
I was an anthro major for awhile...and wanted to go into archaeology. How do you like it?

10. Do you really think Piltdown is an archaeologist.
Seems a bit of skepticism would be in order.

A little Piltdown humor.

11. Looks like every branch of science has its own brand of bad humor, then.

16. But of course!!
Actually that's why Piltdown13 is my all-purpose internet handle -- it's a constant reminder to take all evidence with a healthy skepticism, even if it supports your favorite theory. :-)

15. I like it pretty well so far...
Finishing up my dissertation work now. (Technically, I'm a palaeoanthropologist, but my department classifies that as a subdiscipline of archaeology despite the fact that it has as much to do with bioanthro...but I digress.) Fieldwork isn't my favorite thing in the world, but it's tolerable given the payoff. My dissertation is experimental, though -- I do fieldwork as part of a project in Ethiopia, and didn't want to have my dissertation totally depend on the vagaries of fieldwork in Africa.

14. I heard a chemist talking to a physicist once
The chemist was asking if he'd heard about the new element just discovered. The physicist replied "New element? I thought there were only 4 - earth, air, fire and water."
