How much liability coverage do you have in your car insurance?
the bare state minimum, or more such as 50/100/50, 100/300/100, or 250/500/100?

How much is really needed?

Getting price quotes for car insurance sucks.

1. Can't remember, but...
if you could come up with a chunk of change if absolutely necessary, go for the highest deductible you can afford. It will lower your rates, no matter what coverage you go for.

3. We're maxed out...
We had to in order to get a balloon liability policy. When my husband became a candidate, he became a target. He dropped out of the race, but we kept the policy -- it's only $108 a year for a million dollars.

4. 250/500/250
I think. At any rate, it's a lot more than required. It was only $6/month more.

5. 100/300/100 for me
The minimum is worthless if any serious injuries occur.

An ambulance ride can cost over $1,000 easy, and that's BEFORE you even get to the ER. Add hospital, surgery, physical rehab etc and you will find yourself declaring bankruptcy.

100/300/100 is not much more per month than the minimum coverage.

6. It depends on your situation and risk tolerance.
We carry the max, because we don't want to take a chance that an accident could wipe us out financially. We also have an umbrella liability policy that requires that we have a minimum of 100/300 coverage. When we were younger with no assets, we had lower limits.

7. Same here
250/500/250 and an umbrella policy that kicks in if needed. I have a fear of hitting a Hummer. That would wipe out what little savings my family has managed over the years.

I've never had a bad automobile accident. I'm kinda like Garp. If I'd had a bad accident, I probably wouldn't worry. I've had a house burn down, so I don't worry so much about additional coverage on the house and possessions. Okay - I'm weird and now the world knows.
