My High School Mascot Was A CRAB. --- What was yours?
Edited on Mon May-17-04 02:55 PM by arwalden
Hampton High School - Hampton, VA.

(Collectively, we were called "Crabbers". It's odd, but we learned to love it.)

And what the hell were the cheerleaders called (or know for...) if they team was "The Crabs"

5. Although I open myself up for endless ridicule...
My high school mascot was a hillbilly...honest, Ozark, AR...he wore overalls with one strap undone/missing, and carried shotgun and a jug of shine.

It used to embarass me until I realized there's not much more frightening than a drunken hillbilly with a shotgun.

46. A little explanation
Shades Valley was "over the mountain" (Red Mountain) from Birmingham, AL. If you lived "over the mountain" you were automatically of a higher social status than "townies". Or so it was believed.
Anyway, hence the term Mountaineers. I guess the Hillbilly character was the only mascot they could think of. Nobody had BMWs back then.

(yes, this was back in the days of "separate, but equal")
the football team was "The Sons of Kong". Mascot was a black ape.
I always wondered if they chose the name for themselvesor if it was some white board of education dude's idea of a sick joke.

That was the sole logo of the school. No mascot. No nothin'. Almost every float in every homecoming parade had some form of it somewhere on the float.

Pretty interesting having a Russian mascot in the middle of the Cold War.

The town was founded by a couple of Russians. Hence, the name of the team mascot. Obviously took on new meaning after WW2, particularly during the Reagan years before the fall of the Soviet Union.

62. I was in the class that got to decide the new mascot/colors after the
merger between high schools.

I voted for something rather different (and cynical!!), but the majority of the 'students' borrowed heavily from the Los Angeles Raiders. Black/Silver colors, the little angry dude as the mascot, the lot.

Even the "Roseville Roses", utilizing pink and purple as the colors would have been far more original... Maplewood Mall used pink and purple for its colors, so why not a high school whose athletes were the degenerate scum of the earth and deserved nothing less than humiliation?

69. The Coleman High School Cougars Coleman, WI
I still remember our fight song!

(Tune: Washington and Lee Swing)

Oh, when the Cougar team falls into line;
we're gonna win this game and that's a sign!
Were' gonna fight, fight fight for victory!
And have our names go down in high schol history!
We're gonna yell, yell, yell, at every game;
And the results shall always be the same:
Above the rest you'll always hear the name, hear the name;
Ooooooooooffffff Cole-man High!

GO, FIGHT, WIN!

Back in the day, we (and the other schools in the M&O Confrence) called it "Aneltown." Although since Pvt. Frye Died in Iraq, they don't do it as much anymore...

Nowadays they have combined with Marinette Catholic Central under the name, the Titans to form their football team. Catholic Central joined the M&O after the Private school athletic governing body folded. Lena and Catholic Central have their own separate teams for all other sports.

132. You learn something new everyday around here
That's obviously the tune for Arthur Hill's fight song, too, only the words to ours went:

When Hillite varsity men fall in line
We're out to win that game another time
We're out to fight fight fight with all our might
We're out to fight fight fight fight fight and do it right
You ought to see that Hillite varsity
They are the ones who never ever yield
They're going to march right on to victory
Victory for the gold and blue

NOTES: Yes, I know I said we were the Lumberjacks -- but "Hillites" is a perfectly acceptable alternative. Why the heck I even remember the words escapes me, as I graduated GED in November of my junior year (and Saginaw, at the time, had three-year high schools -- ninth grade was a junior high year) -- and I skipped roughly eight of every ten days (hence the GED).
And, Fudge Stripe Cookays (and Allen), I lived in Hampton, VA when I was 17 and 18. I was in the Army at Fort Monroe, and lived for awhile off-post in a house on Mercury Boulevard.

75. The Colonials
Edited on Mon May-17-04 05:48 PM by CO Liberal
Morristown, NJ was the military capital of the Colonies for two winters during the American Revolution. So our high school sports teams were called "The Colonials". And our high school radio station (WJSV-FM) used to play "Yankee Doodle" as a musical interlude between shows.

Each year, the seniors would select one guy to be "Mr. Colonial" - he dressed up in a colonial uniform and did routines with the cheerleaders during football games. My senior year, I came in second in the voting, so someone else wore the uniform....

80. The Warriors.
University High School - West Los Angeles.

The mascot was a Native American posed in dignified profile, but a few years ago, the L.A.U.S.D. ordered a number of city schools with Native American mascots (Braves, Indians, etc.) to change them.

So, in 1996, the mascot was changed to The Wildcats.

I totally understand about offensive mascots (IMO, the Washington Redskins is just plain wrong), but I was sad to see the Warriors go. Seems to me they could have kept the name, but changed the image -- after all, there are Celtic warriors, Samurai warriors, intergalactic warriors, etc.

88. Cardinals.
Edited on Mon May-17-04 08:31 PM by nownow
Felicity-Franklin H.S. The Cardinal is the Ohio state bird. Most of the other county schools had feline mascots -- wildcat, tiger. You can imagine what the cheers sounded like at athletic events. Having a small songbird for a school mascot is kind of like having a permanent 'kick me!' sign tattooed on your back.

The mascot they used when I was there was just a black-line cartoon bird, usually sitting on a branch. They've since attempted to 'rough it up' by giving it a letter sweater and a glare, with a fist in the air -- but it's still a bird. And their sports teams all still suck, most of the time.

91. We were the Lumberjacks
The only industry in St. Maries, Idaho, is logging. What the hell else would you name the high school teams? (The junior high teams are the Vandals--not because of any malfeasance on their part or love of the Scandinavian warriors of old, but because the University of Idaho's sports teams are the Vandals.)

Some of you folks may be old enough to remember when Texaco stations had a 50-foot fiberglass gas station attendant out in front of them waving at the passing traffic. (Some of you may be old enough to remember gas station attendants, and not the fiberglass kind either.) St. Maries had two Texaco stations, and one of them bought a Texaco man. A Texaco man came all in pieces in a huge box and you had to put it together yourself, then stand it up with your tow truck. Well, the guys working at the gas station got drunk then put the Texaco man together...with the feet on backwards. Since you apparently couldn't get the feet back off, they donated the Texaco man to the school district, who painted his shirt like a checkered flannel in the school colors of forest green and old gold then put him out in front of the elementary school with the feet buried in concrete. About 20 years later, one of the loggers donated a big fiberglass axe.

Lore has it that we were getting our ass kicked in Bball back in the early twentieth century, but according to a local reporter, the team was still "smiling like a kewpie doll" Great:eyes: It does seem to help the sports teams though, making them try harder just to prove they're not wusses.
