Beryl Davis and Astrud Gilberto
Edited on Mon May-17-04 04:47 AM by cleofus1
Beryl sang with Django Rheinhardt

and of course Astrud Sang with stan Getz

so what are your thoughts? Great singers? Smaltz? Tier One Elevator Music?

I always catch a lot of shit when someone hops into my car and Beryl or Astrud start singing on the stereo.

the intial reaction is, "who the heck is that?"

but I love these to ladies and I think they are two of the most under appreciated vocalists of the 20th century.

1. I've never heard of Beryl Davis
.. and I've only heard The Girl from Ipanema by Gilberto. I liked her voice, though!

As for it being elevator music... well, to most people these days, I think anything jazz-like is equivalent. But then, most people seem to think Jessica Simpson is a musical goddess. Astrud would need a bleach and boob job to enter their shallow-but-perky sphere.

4. a lite bio of beryl
Beryl Davis' warm and intimate voice will take you back to a simpler era. Davis who started out singing in her Father's Big Band, was discovered in England by Glenn Miller, she sang with Miller, and also recorded with Django Reinhardt!, and George Shearing. She sang on radio's You're Hit Parade with Frank Sinatra for a year in the mid 40's.

Can you tell me something about her? If you lump her together with Astrud, maybe I should know more. :D

6. thanks for the heads op on bebel
She is a doll, and her voice is just as flawless as her mom's. Does she only sing in portugues? I love the way it sounds...sort of like a cross between french and spanish.

8. BTW Cleofus check out Susana Baca
She is a fantastic Peruvian songstress. She has a wonderful voice and has quickly become one of my favorite singers.

14. Brazilian music in general is wonderful
If you don't know it, try to get one of the compilation disks, like the Putumayo album or one of the two "Beleza Tropical" albums collected by David Byrne.
