Forrest's Weird Encounter of the Day, #2

Item the Second: an Israeli girl who'd seem to fit, externally, a lot of 'liberal' archetypes but who is rabidly pro-Bush.

I've known her for a while, but politics never came up until today, triggered by an image of Ronnie Reagan.

Here I'm totally at a loss. I've studied the whole Middle East quagmire in school, and read a bit since, but I long ago gave up trying to sort out who is pro-who and anti-whom...it seems like the situation in Northern Ireland, where everybody's right and everybody's dead wrong. Sure, we applauded Israel as she set herself up against overwhelming odds as a Jewish homeland and successfully (and, from a military standpoint, brilliantly) defended herself against vastly overwhelming forces. And, sure, we watch in horror as Israel flings its might about and acts disturbingly like the Nazis who helped define the need for a refuge like Israel. And the fact that so many of the worst of the US' neoconservatives are Jewish is topped only by the fact that criticism of them and of Israel's behavior so quickly becomes mired in accusations of anti-semitism and the like.

So, there...I'm thoroughly confused. To me, Israel seems at once simultaneously good-guy and bad-guy, and from talking with some ultra-liberal Jewish friends and acquaintances I've seen a markedly similar dichotomy in that they are lefty all the way in everything but whatever it takes to assure the welfare of Israel. Understandable, if you see Israel as fighting for survival (whether that;'s true or not these days is another thing I'm unsure of) but still just a tad odd.

Anyway, this young woman and I got into a debate. Bottom line is that she's for Bush all the way and does not consider him the 'doofus' that I accused him of being and neither does she consider the people behind him -- who I at least agreed are not short on intelligence -- as fundamentally evil. She does not see the US as out of line in projecting its power willy-nilly and alienating every other nation on Earth, not to mention violating treaties and trusts, knows that there was a direct financial link between Saddam and Al Qaeda, and basically thinks that leftists are insane and the root cause of the problems that we're saying the Right is causing. Etc, etc, etc.

To be honest, I took it easy because I really didn't want to argue. This had something to do with me only securing two or three hours of sleep last night and -- to be really honest -- she's an exceptionally beautiful woman with breasts of a natural splendor rarely seen in nature and I thought she might let me touch them if I didn't get too unruly. I hasten to add that this is not entirely true (my aspirations, I mean, because her mammalian protuberances were really rather magnificent in morphology) but it does underscore my fatigue. I probably should have acquiesced and promised to vote for Bush (the person, I mean), because then she might have................but I digress...

Bottom line is that this young, drug-using (yes, and here I am, a liberal hater-of-America, as a lifelong Drug-Free Zone), wonderfully-pectoralized woman who seems so free-thinking and free-spirited was parroting the most Goebellsian stuff and was really serious about it. She's also heavily into Jewish tradition and all the rest of it, and i indeed very serious about defending the Motherland at all costs. Fair enough, that last, I'm sure, though sometimes it turns out rather unhappily (to coin an understatement).

The truly strange thing to me is that, like lots of Israelis that I've met, she's traveled all over the world: how can you do that and still vote for pigs like Bush and Cheney? How can some intelligent person travel the world, assuming they're not hidden away in luxury resorts the whole time, and not find themselves to some degree disgusted or saddened by some of the elements of US cultural and (increasingly) military-political imperialism? And that's the case, to me, even under better leadership -- the current batch of criminals only makes it that much worse.

She was nice, too...I like her, otherwise, and it was just like aliens ate the political part of her brain. More likely, perhaps, was what was revealed in her obvious devotion to her home country and her concern that the Muslim world is expanding rapidly.

So there you have it. Anyone care to give me a crash course in how she could be that way, assuming that it really is strongly linked to her Judaism and nationality?






Really, if I wasn't up for (no pun intended) fully joining the battle, I should've just let her convince me to vote for Bush. :D

Guess that answers, for ForrestGump, the perennial question "would you get frisky with a babelicious neocon?"
