I'm re-reading Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon, written in 1937. It is a sort of science fiction adventure where a man leaves his body and travels around the galaxy visiting other civilizations.
Bearing in mind that it is a bit dated because there was no TV in 1937, and that radio was the latest thing in technology, consider these observations about one race of aliens he visited:
"Radio, which formerly had been the main force maiking for cosmopolitansim, became suddenly in each country the main stimulus to nationalsim. Morning, noon, and night, every civilized people was assured that enemies, ... subhuman and foul, were plotting its destruction. Armament scares (WMD), spy stories, accounts of barbarous and sadistic behavior of neighboring peoples, created in every country such uncritical suspicion and hate that war became inevitable."
Hmmm. Sound familiar?
