"Seriously, Dude, I'm Gay": Horrible new (what else?) Fox show
Fox issued a stunning news release yesterday for a two-hour reality special to air in June called "Seriously, Dude, I'm Gay" in which, the network said, two heterosexual men will try to convince various people that they are gay. In the news release, Fox described the notion of a straight man "turning gay overnight" as "a heterosexual male's worst nightmare."

For one week, the two straight guys will "immerse themselves in 'the gay lifestyle,' " the network said.

(snip)
If Fox wanted to do a really interesting reality series in which two heterosexual men experience what it is like to be a gay man in America, they ought to also send them someplace like Laramie, Wyo. Of course, that would not be the "outrageously satirical" and "hilarious reality special" that Fox has promised this one will be.

After the two guys are done trying to "pass for gay," they will be put to a "jury of their queers," Fox said. Really, they said that.

2. WTF!!??? That one show Fox did a month or so ago was bad enough.
The one where a straight woman was to pick a date from a group of men...some of whom were gay. THAT was bad enough.

This new show is horrible. Gay stereotypes galore, I predict.

This is bullshit. I only watch Fox because of "The Simpsons". The rest of their programming is either mindless crap or truly offensive shit like this.

I'm wondering if GLADD knows about this new Fox project. They should.

18. They do:
Before receiving Fox's revised and apologetic news release, we'd called the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to talk to them about it.

"The press release speaks to a very backward stereotype that raises red flags for GLAAD," said Steve Macias, the organization's entertainment media director. The show itself, he speculated, probably will be either "flattering" or "tiresome in its premise of yet another straight man pretending to be a gay man.

"This is an old premise -- look at 'Three's Company,' for example -- show after show of straight men pretending to be gay men so that they can find something for themselves."

23. I hope GLADD doesn't mind an email from me.
That's great that GLADD knows about this piece of homophobic shit.

Maybe we need to start boycotting again. The gay community, that is. I was livid when I read about this show.

12. From the minds of Fox/Murdoch
Edited on Fri May-14-04 10:55 AM by zbdent
Married, With Children

The Simpsons

(the above two were the early staples that held Fox in place, until acquiring the NFL rights)

(remove Survivor - was corrected! Not Fox)
Temptation Island
numerous other horrid "reality" shows
Fox News - oops, that's supposed to be important.

15. As a follow-up, Fox rolls out "Minstrel Show 2004"...
Edited on Fri May-14-04 10:52 AM by Richardo
Fox issued another stunning news release yesterday for a two-hour reality special to air in June called "Seriously, Brother-Man, I'm Black" in which, the network said, two caucasian men will try to convince various people that they are African American. In the news release, Fox described the notion of a white man "turning black overnight" as "a white male's worst nightmare."

For one week, the two white guys will "immerse themselves in 'the black lifestyle,' " the network said. Fox exec said this includes listening to rap, chugging '40s', and not being able to get a taxicab to pick them up.

33. You forgot the part about the "jury"
What the hell would it be for that show - a "jury of their n*****z"? Does it not even occur to these f***ing mental giants that "jury of their queers" is incredibly offensive?

What a bunch of useless turdbrains.

(just for fun, replace the word 'gay' and see how it rolls off the tongue...) :eyes:

Fox issued a stunning news release yesterday for a two-hour reality special to air in June called "Seriously, Dude, I'm a Democrat" in which, the network said, two Republican men will try to convince various people that they are Democrats. In the news release, Fox described the notion of a Republican man "turning Democrat overnight" as "a Republican male's worst nightmare."

For one week, the two Republican guys will "immerse themselves in 'the Democratic lifestyle,' " the network said.

immerse themselves in the straight world and pretend to be straight! Gosh, I think that would REALLY wow the audience, it's such an unusual and far-out idea...oh, wait a sec.

or Getting an Apartment, etc. Now, we all KNOW that "those" people couldn't possibly pass for str8, right? I mean, all gay men wear pink boas 24/7 and all lesbians wear flannel shirts and Doc Martens, right?

25. my email to my local Fox station
The Washingon Post is reporting that the Fox Network is going to be broadcasting a show this summer called "Seriously, Dude, I'm Gay".

In the original press release, your network described "the notion of a straight man "turning gay overnight as 'a heterosexual male's worst nightmare.'"

As a gay man, to say I find this homophobic is an understatement.

I really hope that your channel will not broadcast this show. Shows like this promote stereotypes. I can't imagine the network showing a show called "Seriously, Dude, I'm Black" or "Seriously, Dude, I'm Jewish". At least, I hope not.

If this show is broadcast, I will be watching it to find out what advertisers would support such garbage.

Thank you.

I've already passed this along to some of my friends and will be passing it along to more people later.

27. Strange world...
This kind of crap will probably bring in millions and not a station will feel bad about airing it. However, in North Carolina, a station can refuse to air a reading of the names of soldiers killed in Iraq because it is "too political".

Strange world, indeed.

30. this pisses me off SOOOOOOO much!
You can have shows about people pretending to be gay. You can have a show with gays as long as they are doing "safe" things like redecorating an apartment. But NEVER EVER any shows about BEING gay. Gay dating shows on mainstream? Where are they? Fox couldn't stoop any lower.

31. Look at the Bright Side of This --
I think the idea of the show helps legitimize gays in the culture and may help viewers work through and accept gays. The fact that it's supposed to be a joke is actually better than it's being a serious discussion because it happens below the radar.

So many hetero men have a visceral reaction to gay men -- the act of trying to appear gay, or identifying with someone who's trying to act gay, can actually be a step to bridging that gap and being more comfortable with the idea of being around gay people.

Of course, it depends on how it's handled. But there's already a huge change among Republicans and even evangelicals over how gays are regarded. I think this can further that process for some of the viewers.
