What are your favorite movies to watch with your kids?
My daughter is 8, my son 11. We've gotten beyond "Land Before Time" type of stuff (thank God), and have watched a few PG-13 films with them that worked out OK. But we're always looking for new stuff that has some meaningful content. Recent films that we watched that I liked better than they did were "Tuck Everlasting" and "The Whale Rider."

What are your favorites? Two that we go back to again and again are "The Secret of Roan Innish" and "Fly Away Home."

3. Kids 6 and 4
We have DVDs, so, with remote firmly in hand to skip over a couple of scenes, we all like "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

We also like "A Hard Day's Night" which requires no fast forwarding through scenes.

Also:

Babe
Spirited Away (again, with some liberal fast forwarding)
The Inspector General (Danny Kaye)
The Court Jester (again, Danny kaye)
A Concert for George

5. Try Shakespeare's Comedies and Musicals
I "forced" my kids to watch these when they were younger and they usually liked them. My daughter's favorite was "The Taming of the Shrew" with Richard Bruton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Some other oldies but goodies:

Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Romeo and Juliet
Much Ado About Nothing
Guys and Dolls
Gypsy
Labyrinth
Time Bandits
The Dark Crystal
Great Balls of Fire
La Bamba
all the old Disney flicks

12. That is a GREAT idea
They love "Pirates of Penzance," and they're able to make their way through the language and accents in "Roan Innish." I'll have to give them a try on "Taming of the Shrew," that is a fantastic production.

Thanks!

I really appreciated Lilo and Stich because of its theme that even "broken" families are still families.

14. Pink Panther
When my youngest daughter was in her mid-teens, we loved to watch the old Peter Sellers (as "Inspector Cluseau") movies, including "A Shot in the Dark" and the entire "Pink Panther" series.

15. Not a parent, but saw "The Adventures of Robin Hood" again....
That's the one with Errol Flynn & Olivia De Havilland. I loved it as a kid & it's still a rousing adventure. True swashbuckling, true romance & a bit of humor. Gorgeous technicolor.

Tyrone Power's "Zorro" movie is one that still stands up & I bet kids would like it, as well.

I'm all for free presentation of adult themes. But there need to be other movies that are not just Total Kiddy Krap! Of course the LOTR movies & Pirates of the Caribbean did pretty well. They might have been scary for the very youngest, but had something to offer most moviegoers. Who needs clinical sex scenes when you can just watch Johnny Depp in action?

17. My son is 13
When he was younger we watched all the old Disney movies. Now we tend to watch Star Trek, Star Wars, and the Harry Potter movies. He loves the Lord of the Rings movies but they are too violent for me. He also loves what I call the rated S for silly movies, Animal House, Caddyshack anything with Jim Carrey in it, etc.
