"Daddy..what's a lesbian?"
"did you ask your mom, son?"
"yeah"
"and what did she say?"
"she told me to ask you.."
"well...remember how Aunt DeeDee has a girl roomate?"
"Yeah..."
"Well lesbians have the same girl roomate forever."

I swear to God, this was the conversation verbatim. I had to stop myself from cracking up.

Anyone remember asking this question of their dad or mom? The kid was about 8.

1. You know this is a South Park episode.
Tell your son that if you want to be a lesbian you have to lick carpet.

4. I never asked. TV taught me.
I think that's why I never considered it strange or weird. It just seemed like another personality trait.

I'm gay and have nieces and I remember being at a family gathering where my husband couldn't attend and one of my nieces asked me "where's your...(she looked around like she wasn't sure what to say) mate?"

Another bit of awkwardness occurred at another time. My husband was previously in a straight marriage and had a son. His son is now grown and has kids of his own. With the first child (a beautiful smart girl, now 9) she was saying "grandpa T..." and "grandpa B..." (me being "grandpa B...") until a certain point. Then his son was a little uncomfortable with her calling me "grandpa B...". So we just dropped it without any hesitation or disagreement on my part. She just calls me "B...". I'm not that vain about the age thing, but I can easily relinquish being called "grandpa"!!!

Sorry this wasn't exactly an answer to your question. If it had come up when I was growing up I can imagine much less sensitive replies, if any at all!

Really your conversation that you overheard sounds pretty sensitive and appropriate for an 8 year old.

6. I agree it was appropriate
But it was funny in the sense that the dad really had to think on his feet...and was really trying to get out of it.

If you were there I swear you'd find it funny too...cute and funny.

7. I found it funny, too, and sweet
If I were there, I'd be trying not to laugh.

It's really an adorable story.

Thanks for sharing it.
