My day, my day, O holy crap on a crutch, my freakin' day...
1. Wake at 7am

2. Drive from Boston to Cambridge

3. Pry rusted-on licence plate off old car which is about to go to charity

4. Drive to place where one pays parking tickets in Cambridge to find building boarded up and closed; no indication of location of new ticket-paying place visible

5. Say screw that, drive over Longfellow Bridge into downtown Boston

6. Park at Suffolk courthouse garage

7. Walk 8 blocks to building where my insurance company is

8. Wait a bit, get new (used) car insured, cancel old insurance

9. Walk to Boston City Hall, pay Boston parking tickets

10. Drive back into Cambridge, locate new parking ticket payment place

11. Pay ticket

12. Drive to DMV in Watertown

13. Take licence plate off car

14. Wait in line 1/2 hour to a) register new car, b) turn in old plates, c) get drivers licence renewed

15. After 1/2 hour, see yellow signs everywhere saying "You can't pay for anything unless you have cash or check"

16. Realize checkbook is back in apartment

17. Put licence plate back on car

18. Drive from Watertown to Boston to get checkbook

19. Drive back to Watertown, take licence plate off car again

20. Wait in line, get to lady who can help me

21. Realize that, somewhere along the way, the Title to the new(used) car has fallen out of my folder of paperwork

22. Have very quiet nervous breakdown

23. Walk back to car saying "Fuck" several dozen times, call insurance company, they tell me that they have the title in their office

24. Put licence plate on car again

25. Drive back to downtown Boston, pull up in front of building, nice insurance lady brings Title down to me

26. Drive to Washington Street, find parking place

27. Take licence plate off car

28. Go to Chinatown DMV

29. Get car registered, hand in old plates, get new plates

30. Go upstairs, get licence renewed

31. Put new licence plate on car

32. Drive down to Boston City Hall again, find parking

33. Wait in line, get parking permit (couldn't do this before because I knew I'd be changing licence plates)

34. Battle rush hour traffic

35. Pull onto street which I have lived on for a month, which is permit-parking only

36. Enjoy small moment of happy karma: Find parking place in front of apartment building, and can now park there legally

37. Enter apartment, clock reads 4:27pm

38. Collapse.

Why did you waste so much gas? Kill your car, ride the train and bus everywhere. If you HAVE to drive, for crying out loud, pull your head out of your ass so you aren't so damned wasteful.

You've been warned.

Oh yeah - aren't you glad that's over for a while? Have a

4. You live in Watertown?
Have you been to Linda's Donut Shop?

Best cake donuts ever.

Have one - sounds like you need a pick-me-up.

Another pick-me-up:

ARG Poll on Ohio

Kerry: 50%
Bush: 43%

19. Forrester
Not *quite* an SUV, very much small enough to navigate the city, excellent gas mileage, but just tough enough to scoff at the 40 billion potholes in this town. My old Civic lost three tires and two rims to those potholes. This thing just says fuuuuuck you.

20. Good choice--old boyfriend of mine used to drive one of those.
Great cars...NOT an SUV, but sort of a station wagon on steroids. He drove the hell out of his in Milwaukee (during some REALLY harsh winters). Good gas mileage, tough as hell, and really dependable.

I've been VERY happy with it. Great car. If it doesn't have a deflector thingie for the front, though, get one; the weak point is the windshield. Very easily cracked.

Maybe next time I'll wait too long to get my licence renewed, drive an old piece of crap until it falls apart and I *have* to get a new car, scramble like mad to get it all squared away, but not before moving to a place with insanely limited parking if you don't have a permit.

Oh...wait...did that already.

But I had to get my insurance done in Boston and turn in licence plates in Boston, stuff I couldn't do online, so I said screw it, let's do it all.

I actually handle bureaucrats well. I have a gift. I get things done amid people who don't like to work. Seriously. I learned how as a paralegal, having to get things from court clerk offices under a deadline.
