3. That would be my son.
He is deathly afraid of the Down escalators. Doesn't seem to have a problem with the Up ones though.

6. My son was petrified of elevators up until about 11 years old
whenever we went someplace that had really long escalators we either had to take the stairs or look for an elevator. Even at Universal Studios

9. The longest escalator in the world at universal (so says son) Also, the
escalator off the metro subway by the D.C. Zoo. I thought we would never see the light of day.

When I was a kid, I was terrified that I'd get my foot caught & it would be sliced up like a loaf of bread.:silly:

Hey, Dookus, how's Polly these days?

10. Hey Annabel....
she's doing pretty well, thanks! I've been stuffing with her food and she's put a little weight on. She looks good and is acting fairly normal - which for an old cat means she lays around a lot. But she gets out and visits the neighbors every day and has her own routine.

thanks for asking!

12. Once I start traveling I keep moving 'til I get there
Anything else would be unreasonable.
What's the alternative? To stand there while ascending, like Little Eva going to heaven? Bow to the inert rabble below? Absorb the scenery?
Talk to us, Dookus. What happened to you on the escalator? :)

13. it's just
a pet peeve of mine. Escalators and people-movers at airports turn otherwise healthy, normal people into stone-cold paralytics.

It's not like it's a damned ride at Disneyland! Move, people, move!

The worst was last year at the mall. I get behind a gaggle of teenage girls who of course are escalator-paralyzed. When they get to the bottom, however, instead of moving away, they congregate RIGHT at the bottom of the escalator, deciding which shitty store they should to next. I plowed through 'em with an "excuse me.... there's an escalator here".

15. Here at the new airport terminal in Detroit, it almost is a ride. They
have pretty colored lights flashing on the walls, and music playing. But if I feel that laser stare, I guess I'll move along knowing who is barrelling up behind me...sigh.

I'm probably tryin' to make my flight.

Though I've never been to Denver... but I'll look for you on the people-mover if I ever get there! You'll be the dazzled-looking one staring at the shiny things, right? :)

14. What really irritates me on escalators is parents who insist on bringing
a stroller on it...even though it says NO NO NO NO. It's just plain stupid and annoying. My sister in law and I got in a huge fight over this once because I refused to do it. I mean what if I slipped? there goes my little boy rolling end over end. I don't even like to think of it.

19. Hey! You're talkin' about me
Yep, I'm the person who drives you crazy. I can actually see myself at the top of the escalator with my right foot about three inches off the ground watching the steps go by me. I don't have any excuses, but it takes me three or four tries before I can put my foot down on a step. I need to see the pace of the escalator. In the rest of my life I tend to walk quickly with long strides.

Try to judge us~ we really are decent folks. ;)

21. nope....
people pausing a second to get on isn't the problem.

It's the people, who, once on, don't seem to realize that it can work the same way as a staircase.

20. Grade school safety programs actually tell children to stand still
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 02:14 AM by SOteric
on an elevator. It is drummed into the minds of children, and also especially the elderly, that they should stand still on an elevator to minimise potential balance-related trauma.

And the Escalator Safety Foundation mentions that allowing moving riders to pass on the left is recommended, but in the event that there is insufficient room for passage, stationary is the default, -because your desire for speed should not come at the expense of someone else's sense of safety.

23. Thanks for delivering the authoritative escalator ettiquette smack-down
I am one of those people who stands still and to the right. I don't like to climb the escalator steps because they are usually quite a bit more of a step than normal staircases and I also have a general apprehensiveness about the whole motion thing. I also hesitate at the top making sure to get on safely.

Me niether, but you just know it's happened. They disappear screaming into the inky blackness beyond, never to be seen again.

Wheeeeee!

24. I wish Americans would get a little more European on escalators.
Stand on the RIGHT, walk on the left.
Why do people in the U.S. have to walk and ride side-by-side like so many siamese-twins?

nothing burns my butt more than 2 people standing still on an escalator and standing side by side blocking those of us who usually walk on escalators
