I thought it would be a nostalgic kick to show "Xanadu" to the kids, so we rented the DVD. They were totally into it. They also loved "Cats", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band", "The Wizard of Oz" and "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory".
What occurred to me was this: what with all the incredible technological effects available today, and the visual & technical geniuses making films today, none of them have any heart or any feeling of dreams. "Xanadu" may have been a mediocre film in many respects, but the music, and Olivia Newton John really did convey a dream, the idea of a place without cynicism, filled with nothing but hope.
Why is it that with all the technology and money in Hollywood, they can't see to it to make an uplifting film, a musical (not a cartoon) that says no to cynicism?
I realize "Chicago" and "Moulin Rouge" came out lately, and they are fine, but they are highly stylized, oh-so-cool type musicals.
I realize that Hollywood would say that there's no demand for such material, but how can they know for sure if they never make it?
don't get me wrong, I like a lot of stuff that's out now, but sometimes I just want an honest-to-goodness feel-good extravaganza, dammit!
