Rank the countries you *have* visited in order of preference
Hey,

Inspired by JCCyc to ask myself this question, I'll answer it and ask it of y'all:

1. Spain
2. Mexico
3. France
4. India
5. Ecuador
6. Dominican Republic
7. Canada
8. Switzerland
9. Italy
10. England
11. Iceland
12. Germany

Won't count Luxembourg and Monaco, having seen too little of them to judge. I'm sure Italy would rank higher if I'd seen more of it. English people are lovely but the food and weather aren't. Icelandic and German food were even less appealing.

The only place this lacto-ovo-pesco-pollo-vegetarian had a hard time finding a meal.

15. Turkey
I'm dying to go to Turkey, but fiance thinks it may be dangerous and/or "uncomfortable" (that's the best word I can think of to describe his mentality). Any suggestions on how to change his mind?
Thanks!

27. Hmmm, good question...
Maybe I souled have qualified that statement... the last time I was there was several years before 9/11. I can't say if there's much anti-American sentiment these days... though we never hear about it in the media. But you should definitely research the issue. Maybe stay in the touristy areas.

My experience with the Turks is that if you're respectful of their customs and religion, they'll be respectful of you.

If I had to pick the "safest" Muslim country to visit, I'd pick Turkey.

Hope that helps!

29. Just burned in effigy of Bush
in Istanbul, I think. I'd say anti-American sentiment is pretty high. But I suspect it is everywhere, and at this rate I may never get to see Turkey, or any Muslim country for that matter.

2. Austria
3. Canada
4. Switzerland
5. Germany
6. Holland
7. England
8. Aruba (added on edit - my honeymoon. I forgot!)

Plus, Monaco, but unless you actually stay overnight, it's hard to say you've visited.

I'd love to spend some time in Spain, Italy, Greece and Australia/New Zealand.

No desire to visit the Middle East, India or Africa. Asia is also a low level of interest...maybe China.

18. It's a matter of a reality check.
Were I independently wealthy, I'd go just about anywhere.

But not being independently wealthy, I have to pick and choose my spots and opportunities. I have a great identity with European culture - romance languages, classical music, art and architecture - so I want to go places where I can enjoy the kinds of things I identify with that are missing in the USA.

The places I mentioned just don't pique my interest.

BTW - I don't have a burning desire to "see the USA," either. Outside of the major cities, who cares? I drove from NJ to NV last June...thank Thor for the 6-CD changer in the VW bug! B-O-R-I-N-G! How much grass can one watch grow? Hello!...Kansas?!!
