Just tried out my first serving of Soy Milk. IT'S BROWN! Eeeeeeew.
Geez Louise...I had been hearing about all the health benefits, and somebody had posted here a couple of days ago about how much they liked soy milk.

Man. Is there any WHITE soy milk (hidden racism???? anybody ever catch Tom Joyner and his crew do that riff? hilarious!)

I dunno. It tasted kind of chalky (Eden Soy, fortified with b vitamins and other good stuff). Any recommendations on more milk-like soy milk?

1. Yes, you can et white soy milk
Stay away from the stuff in the boxes that sit on the shelfs without refrigeration. Buy the soy milk that you find in the dairy section, that has an expiration date. That soy milk is wonderful!

And you can get it flavored with vanilla, or chocolate, or plain, and probably a bunch more as well.

4. It's "original" flavor, not chocolate or vanilla. But also off the shelf.
I'll go to Whole Foods, and get some out of the Dairy Department. Any brands in particular that are good?

21. Vanilla is brown, too.
It's not so bad. It used to be all my daughter would drink, for the first six years of her life. Eden Soy Extra, vanilla. She couldn't tolerate any other soy milk brand or flavor (except plain Eden Soy vanilla).

5. Does It Spoil Or Sour As Quickly As Regular Milk?
And is it 100% fat free (like skim milk)??

6. It last @ 2 months refrigerated... It does come fat free, I believe
but my "version" has 4 gm fat per 1 cup serving.

I've never had any spoil. Since we only use it on cereal the half gallon sometimes last a couple of months.

12. My veggie roommate keeps cartons of it in the cupboards
Says they last months without problems if unopened, although I haven't tested his theory, he seems to be fairly healthy.

11. My favorite, too, but it's expensive.
Target has a good one and it's only $2.44 a half-gallon. Don't remember the name. It's in my refrigerator at home and I'm at work.

7. My favorite is Westsoy.
I like their vanilla Soy Slender product. I can't have sugar anymore, and this is sweetened with Splenda instead of sugar. For cooking, I use their unsweetened Organic soy milk. I've tried the Silk, and it just tastes too watery to me. It also has a lot of sugar added. Just keep trying and you'll find one that is right for you. Experiment.

8. Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like fat free, as little sugar as possible
no artificial sweeteners. Taste, look like milk.

Impossible dream?

9. Don't buy the cheap shit.
And by that, I mean the cheapest soymilk on the shelf. I drink "Silk" vanilla flavour.
It's good, and it's healthy.
My cholesterol has decreased since I've been drinking it.

the cheap shit tastes like that hippy-made crap you got at the Food Co-op 25 years ago...Chalkwater.

10. I'm in the minority here...
But I think Silk is NASTY! We prefer Sun Soy soymilk. We love the chocolate and the vanilla is great for making shakes or hot chocolate. The plain is excellent for cooking.

15. I've had the plain with cereal...
It's not bad. I don't eat much cereal anymore so I can't really say I'm used to the taste.

14. Soy milk -- the beige beverage
I think that would make a good tag line for a commercial on soy milk.

I like the Westsoy light vanilla. The fat free is too watery, and the plain is too bland. But the vanilla has enough flavor to be good straight up, or over cereal.

YMMV

16. Silk Soy Milk is baby blm's FAVORITE.
They make regular soy, vanilla and chocolate. The chocolate is so rich that I mix one ounce of it in with 7 ounces of regular.

17. I give another vote for Silk brand.
I drink the vanilla . Just love it. I use the boxes mostly..Put them in the refrigerator, get them cold and to me they are just as good as from the dairy case.

Silk is more expensive. I get mine at Cosco- a box with 12 quart size boxes is $10.99.

18. It's not processed enough.
:)

Plain soy milk is like plain yogurt. A tolerance has to be developed. I usually only drink vanilla Silk. It has a slight, but not unpleasant, aftertaste.

19. Have you looked at mammal milk?
If you've ever seen any (human) breast milk, it can come in shades of a watery white to a blueish white. Even skim cow milk is kind of a bluish-white...
