Who's the worst singer ever?
IMO, I think Bob Dylan is the worst singer ever. He really blows. His voice sucks.

Sorry, but that's the way I feel.

Who do you think can't sing?

32. Bolton gets an unfair bad rap.
He sounds no different than Joe Cocker, but people give Cocker a break because he's a slob.

People rag on Bolton because of his cover songs, his hair, his middle-aged fan base, his whole inoffensive look & attitude.

While I don't think he's destined for any kind of greatness, I see him as a slightly more soulful John Tesh - his renditions are fine with me, although they are a bit overwrought.

and as for Bolton, I never thought he was, strictly speaking, a bad singer. He makes bad music, which is not the same as being a bad singer.

While she can technically sing very well, her vocal histrionics are annoying beyond belief. The phenomenon of white girls copying black singing styles is annoying, especially when exaggerated, and when the flourishes don't really convey an emotion that relates to the song.

Strangely, even a lot of young black singers are starting to sound like this. You are no Aretha and you are no Chaka. Go back to the drawing board, learn a bit of restraint, and how to make the song come alive instead of just rying to show off what kind of acrobatics your voice can do.

You've just described my biggest gripe with today's pop music! I love a truly soulful singer as much as everyone else--Aretha, Patti LaBelle, etc., but these new girls need to find their own style. Singing scales is not singing! American Idol is the worse offender for promoting this. Yuk.

39. A lot of people are not judging objectively.
A lot of people naming Mariah, Celine, whatever. I'd guess you just don't like her genre - slick, overproduced pop ballads. It's her niche and she fills it well. Just as Michelle Shocked or Sheryl Crow fill theirs well.

Hell, Sheryl Crow is a good example - she's not a really fgood singer by any stratch, but she's a great performer, so people love her.

Celine Dion is a very good singer. I don't like a lot of her material either, but I think she's got skills. Sure, she's a bit nasal, but so is Barbara Streisand...

I love her voice! The Pretenders are a phenomenal group, and Crissy does a great job with their music.

And I heard Rush Lowbrow explain the whole Pretenders thing once. They actually cleared using the song "My City Was Gone" with the label AND the band. Ironic, since Crissy is perhaps the most left-leaning person in music besides Ani Difranco. Go figure.

Or maybe it's her own form of subversion.

a very nice baritone voice, good resonance, but the word around Dinkytown in Minneapolis is that he was getting nowhere singing with his very nice voice, so he went to the other voice and that's when he started getting popular.

They both suck on their own, but do some pretty good things (albeit over the top) together. Meat Loaf's music is very OTT, but that's what is so great about it. Both "Bat Out OF Hell" albums are great, IMO.

as I said above, word on the streets on Dinkytown in Minneapolis, where Dylan started as a mere lad in coffee-houses, is that he has a very decent baritone - but was going nowhere until he adapted his current sound.

151. Dylan is a great songwriter. Absolutely. However,
I can't appreciate his songs unless someone else is singing them. To me, Dylan's voice is a combination of fingernails scratching on a blackboard and the neighborhood cats going at it at about 3 a.m.

I have the same reaction to Neil Young. Great songwriter, lousy lead singer. Where is his voice in the harmony of CSNY? Did the other three just cover it up?

137. Lou Reed has a great voice, but he is a terrible singer.
Except on "What Goes On" which he sings really well.

He has a funny little riff on a recent version of Sweet Jane, when he had this Downtown singing sensation Anthony touring with him. He let Anthony do his soulful stuff and said, after a pause, "If I'd 'a' sung like that, things woulda been very different. I'd 'a' been singin' about Little Surfer Girls and bein' all alone In My Room...

"'In My Room?' What the fuck is that shit?"

Ok, maybe not the worst, but here is my story. I went to an audition for a musical. I knew I could not sing and I asked the director for a non-singing part such as an assistant, etc....She encouraged me and insisted everyone could sing. I told her I could not and would gladly partake of the back stage activities. Then she insists on having me sing! I sing and she stops me! She gave me me a job as the assistant to the producer! True story. So sad.
