it's the end of the world as we know it . . .
from Tuesday's New York Post (sorry, no link) . . .

Dylan: Blowin' into 'Idol'?

So what happened to Bob Dylan -- rebel folk-rock hero?

Not only is the '60s anti-establishment icon appearing in a commercial for Victoria's Secret, but now he's interested in being a judge on "American Idol."

Entertainment Weekly reports that Dylan's "people" contacted "AI" exectutive producer Nigel Lythgoe about The Mumbling One appearing next season as a guest judge.

there's more, but that's the gist of it . . . I'm think I'm going to cry . . . or puke . . . or both . . .

1. I thought that already happened when the Clash's "London Calling"
was used to peddle Jaguars, and CCR's "Fortunate Son" was butchered and used in a patriotic-themed jeans commercial. Like the Clash said in "Death or Glory": "He who fucks nuns will later join the church". Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy.

4. I knew Dylan was losing it...

I went to a Dylan concert and he had members of the SNL band backing him up, specifically that blonde dude who looks like he has an intestinal problem. The concert itself was in a "music hall," and there were people there in ties, and I was just like, "Oh crap...I'm in Hell."

This was some time ago, but the experience made this not all that surprising to me...unfortunately.

5. I loved Garrison Keilor's spoof of him during the late 1980s
Overwhelmingly funny. I still laugh hysterically thinking of it

6. Why does everyone insist on making Dylan a king...
...when all he wants to be is the court jester?

I see this as the perfect career move for him to make. Dylan has been goofing on his audience pretty well constantly since the motorcycle accident, why change now?

11. I was reading something recently...
And I don't recall what, but the author was arguing that the people who accuse Dylan of selling his soul need to look back at an interview he gave during the 60s where the interviewer asked him if there was a product he would ever permit a song of his to advertise, and Dylan laughed and said, "ladies underwear."

Now if I could only remember what that article was. x(

12. Court Jester in style

I guess some people don't have any sense of irony.

My reaction to hearing Dylan wants to be a judge on American Idol is to laugh out loud.

God, I hope they're stupid enough to take the bait and pick him as a judge.

It would be an absolute riot.

I don't think Dylan has lost it at all either.
I saw him in August and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen of his.
A version of the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll that was for the ages, for example.

13. I think Dylan is a good example of a "punk" musician
And one of the earlier ones, too. The man has consistently fucked with audience since the mid 60s, all the while creating terrific music.

15. Plus, I would LOVE to see the latest teeny-flavor-of-the-month...
...try to sing "Idiot Wind."

Or "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues."

Or "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat."

Or "Positively 4th Street."

14. should be interesting
Dylan knows what both success and failure are like. He's made as many bad albums as good albums so maybe he'd have some tips for the contestants.
