1. soooo hard....
I love them all so much.

But I gotta fall back on Diamond Dogs - the album that made me fall in love with him.

3. I like Diamond Dogs, but Lodger would be my pick for most underrated
Ziggy got me into Bowie, but Heroes is where I really swooned.

24. "Candidate" is a terrific song. But I always loved "When you Rock

and Roll with me." I wanted that sung at my wedding. But my wife wouldn't go for it. Oh well.

Diamond Dogs. Definitely his best album.

edit: punctuation.

2. Hey, what about the later stuff?
I love "Scary Monsters...". That's my fave, followed closely by "Earthling", primarily because I saw the "Earthling" tour and he was having such a good time performing those numbers.

7. There's only ten spots, and honestly all the albums I nominated
Are 1,000 times better than Let's Dance.

8. Yeah, just not "Inside"
That was freaky. Saw Bowie with NIN on his "Outide" tour in Atlanta. He and Trent Reznor did a fantastic duet of "scary monsters" with lots of NIN-style synth noise. It was f*cking amazing.

18. That was truly orgasmic!!
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 09:43 PM by Ramsey
I knew I liked you, man.

They also did a fabulous version of NIN's "Hurt", in which Bowie outsang Trent by leaps and bounds, and looked a million times better too!

Edit: This is a total vanity post, but here is the link to my Bowie ghost-fan page. Hasn't been updated in over a year, but there are some fun pictures there, and I ran a Bowie cover song contest that was featured on Bowienet a couple of years ago.

16. yeah...
I've Bowie tons of times. He used to be so serious and "showy". After Earthling, he just started having fun out there. Nobody puts on a show like Bowie... he's just got astounding charisma. The closest thing to it was when I saw Sinatra.

23. Get this...
David Bowie was shooting a movie in Vancouver a few years ago ("Exhuming Mr. Rice"--does anybody know if it was ever released?), right around the time that "Earthling" was released. He decided to put together a show since he had time to kill in Vancouver. A small ampitheatre venue with space for 2,000 ticket holders. It was an amazing one-off show, and the venue was so intimate, it was like seeing him in a nightclub. Quite a change from the only other time I saw him perform, the "Glass Spider" tour, which was too much of a stadium event to be truly enjoyed as a musical performance.

9. David Live at the Tower in Philadelphia
is the best Bowie album and possibly one of the greatest live albums of all time. David Sanborn... Awesome Diamond Dogs material like "Candidate" for example - best dynamic build and release ever. Also the "Aladdin Sane" on there is incredible and the jazzy style of "Changes" defines Sade`s entire singing career in that one song.

10. with a career as long as his...

this is nearly impossible.

hunky dory, ziggy and aladdin sane are essential.

but then there's station to station, low and heroes...

and and and...

well, if I was forced to pick ONE... it's aladdin sane

12. Hunky Dory
I don't believe I'm only the 2nd person to vote for this. Kooks, Queen Bitch, Oh! You Pretty Things, The Belway Brothers, Changes. This is my most essential Bowie album - the album I play when nothing else seems to move me. I like all the others but always thought this was his best.

15. Another vote for Lodger
He did so much good stuff, though. Aladdin Sane was the first record of his I bought, and it's very powerful stuff. OTOH, "Bewlay Brothers" off Hunky Dory may well be the one damn song that can make me break down and cry. And Low and Heroes are simply amazing-- but I like Lodger just that much better, the songs are, not necessarily more coherent, but more concrete.

The Low Symphony is okay, I guess, but it's kinda like those Symphonic Music of Pink Floyd type records: the goodness is already in the melodies, and the orchestration is just kind of a novelty. I confess I've lost interest in Phil Glass over the years, especially now that they give him entire orchestras to write for. I liked it when the instrumentation was as austere as the motivic material. Music in Changing Parts is a lot of fun to listen to, especially in an altered state.

Which is 1. Outside! Granted, not his most well known, but definitely his best!

I am seeing Bowie tomorrow night, any messages for the Thin White Duke??

Edit: Oh, and Bowie has a new album coming out called Reality. Due in September.

19. Tell him there was far too much penis in "The Man Who Fell To Earth"
Seeing Bowie's wasn't too bad, but I could have gone the rest of my life without seeing Rip Torn and Bernie Casey's.

I guess I should clarify that I am seeing him play in concert, so I probably won't actually be talking to him. But you never know :-)
