I joined DU the end of May 2001 and I lurked
until 7/9/2001 when I posted my first post.
I thought it was about time. :-)

After the election, I went online in search of alternatives to the media and news sources like Newsmax. I found DU after spending some time at commondreams.org, bushwatch.com, and elsewhere. Those halcyon days for me were ones of Buzzflash, DU, bartcop, and mediawhoresonline.

I think my first actual post was sometime in 2002. I have memory of lurking before 9-11, but I really can't remember. I know I started reading more in earnest after 9-11, or else started then, and then had my first post in early 2002. I remember sitting at my desk the night I was in the 700 club, and that was at my finally new desk after being relocated a few times after 9-11, so that it puts me in the 700 club sometime after late April, 2002. Perhaps into June. I remember it being a hot day.

I wish there was a way I could find out when I joined, because I've long wondered. The period around 9-11, and most of 2001, really, is so hazy for me due to much trauma, so I can't remember exactly when I started reading. Seems like I found DU soon after the inaugaration of the Idiot Bastard Filth Moran, but I can't even be sure of that.

If memory serves, when I joined there were maybe 13,000 members. But there might not even have been that many.

Damn, I wish I knew. this has bothered me for a long time.

Funny story about how I heard about DU......... I was on another message board (allegedly non-political, but swarming with RWers) when I got into a discussion with this freeper type and he said something like "Well if that's the way you feel about it you should be in DU" and he gave me the link. That's one freeper that I owe a debt of gratitude.

I lurked for almost a year. I would sign in and see what other people where talking about. I felt like it was nice to find people who had opinions like mine. I really didn't have anything different to add to the discussion so I always thought it best to keep my mouth shut and let other people do the talking.

But one day in April 2002 I signed in and went to the General Discussion Forum and noticed that some of the things being said about a particular topic where so absolutely wrong that something just had to be done. Right there and then I made my first. I can't remember if anybody had a reaction to what I said (posted) but I have tried to check in as often as I can since then. I really like it here and have made some very good friends here. Thank you so ever much DU for just being a good solid democratic voice of reason in an overly republican world
