A kitten was in distress, and there's no way for me to know if it got away
Last night, coming home late from work (yeah, I had to do work Sunday night) I was walking down a calm residential street when I heard a loud, desperate, high-pitched kitten meow. At first I though it was just hungry and lost, but when I got nearer I saw the meows came from inside a car -- under the hood!

It turns out, after I asked the janitor of the building in front, there was a stray dog hounding the kitten, and it got inside the car by squeezing through the space between the suspension coils and the hole in the chassis they go through. The dog was long gone, but the cat either didn't know how to get out or got stuck somewhere.

The car didn't belong to any resident, so there was no way for the janitor to locate the owner.

Me and a pizza delivery guy tried to find a way to get the kitten out, but no luck. I ended up asking for paper and pen (the pizza guy had a pen and the janitor had paper) and sticking a note under the windshield wiper -- "DON'T TURN ON THE CAR! THERE'S A CAT STUCK IN THE ENGINE! OPEN THE HOOD!" I made sure to retrace the letters lots of times so the message was quite visible.

The real kicker was, the kitten seemed to have sensed we gave up and were going away -- its meows got more desperate as soon as I started walking. I can't stop thinking of that. Please tell me it ended well afterwards.

1. At least you tried
The poor little thing. The same thing happened to me at a shopping mall several years ago. I left a note and waited for about 30 minutes, hoping the car's owner would show up, but never did, and I had to leave. Felt terrible about it for quite a while afterward, but what else could I have done?

I hope the car owner was able to see the note and cared enough to try to rescue the kitten. Bless you and the delivery guy for trying!

2. I'm sure they saw the message and probably heard the kitten.

I'm sure the car belonged to a cat lover. They saved the kitten, took her home and the kitten is, as we speak, laying on silk pillows, dining on fresh fish & cream.
Do you feel better?

3. Chances are the cat's ok.
Their instincts are very quick. Ever see a cat sitting calmly one second and then, like a shot, dash around the entire footage of the house in a split second? Also, I had an experience like this myself once. There were stray cats in our neighborhood and one of them decided to choose one of my wheelwells for a warm bed for the night. I started the car, and immediately, before I had the chance to buckle my seatbelt, I saw it projectile itself several feet from the car.

I think it'll be ok. I really do.

4. why didn't you call the cops?
My neighbors once had a injured squirrel stuck under their car. I called the cops and they came.

Unfortunately the squirrel got runned over in the attempt to rescue him, so it didn't have a happy ending.

But the point was, the cops came and tried to help.

1) I didn't think of that.
2) On second thought, the less said about Brazilian police, the better.

Edit: grammar
