can you help me fix my toilet?
The water won't stop running, even after the tank fills. I looked it up and found an article with this picture:

The article says "To isolate the problem, remove the tank lid. Grab the float and lift. If the water stops running the problem is in the float mechanism."

My toilet does not have a float!

Help?

1. Lift the little rubber thingy that covers the hole at the bottom.
You don't have a float? wow. If there is a chain there pull up on it. Good luck! :hi:

2. It's possible that you have an integrated float mechanism.
It's probably black plastic. The float is attached to the water inlet pipe, instead of on an arm.

3. Ew.... "Stool Filling Tube"

4. On the stool filling tube is there
a round object that surrounds the tube that goes up and down? If so, that is your float.

5. Replace the rubber flapper ("tank ball" in your diagram).
They sometimes get chewed up and lose their seal. A new one will run you about $2 at the hardware store.

Also, if you use chemicals (like 2000 Flushes or Clorox tablets) in your tank, this tends to degrade the rubber in the flapper faster.

6. You need a new ball set
Get thee to the hardware store - ask there to have them explain how to replace it.

They aren't expensive.

7. Well, it's not always the float
Toilet problems seem to be my particular nemesis as a homeowner.

Usually it's the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. Sometimes the chain gets caught underneath it, or it deterioates, or for whatever reason it can't seal correctly. Then the water drains constantly, so the toilet keeps running to try to keep the tank full. Aarrggh.

So take a look there, and if the seal seems okay, then let me know and I'll give you some more ideas.

Seems fitting the I used my 1000th post on a toilet question :D .

8. Simple To Fix
And harder to explain. Your best bet is going into your local hardware store, explain the problem and the knowledgeable guy behind the counter should be able to explain what you need and what to do.

After all, there should be plenty of visual aids there to help.

9. You have a "Flowmaster" not a float
Your problem is that the flapper is worn out. Use only "Korky" flappers; they work the best. (Why? The cone that goes into the tank-drain hole is longer on a "Korky" than on any other kind.) They're less than four dollars each and come with new chains.

13. It's Not The Flapper
The tank fills up; the water is draining in the overflow tube.

10. flush the toilet
watch the thing in the tank that rises up as the water level rises.

it might be a cylinder which floats straight up on a thin pipe.

that's the float. it tells the valve when your toilet tank is full.

sometimes it gets stuck if there's any gunk around it. so one thing you do is manipulate it up and down to see if you can use a tiny bit of extra force to convince the valve to shut off the water feed.

====

but if the valve shuts the water off and you hear additional water trickling down into the bowl, it means your valve is fine but there's a bad seal on the "flapper" part. The "flapper" part is whatever it is which opens to let water flush from the tank to the bowl. sometimes it doesn't seal shut at the end of the flush. you might be able to sponge it off to smoothe it down and get a better seal. but if that doesn't work and you still hear a "trickle" sound from the tank to the bowl when the valve is shut off, then you need to replace the flapper piece. turn your water off to the toilet, remove the flapper piece and take it to your hardware store and beg for help.

15. thank you but to be clear: my toilet does not have a float
Really. It doesn't. Know how I know?

Because when I was a kid, if the lid was off the tank I wouldn't use the toilet because that damned giant bulby thing terrified me. :scared:

11. Flapper first
I agree with the above posters that the flapper is probably the first place to look. The flapper is an easy fix.

The second place is the flush mechanism. If you don't have a float, you could well have a Fluidmaster. The Fluidmaster has a replaceable seal that fails. Check their site at http://www.fluidmaster.com/
