"Vetted"
Does anyone know what the origin of the word 'vetted' is? When I looked it up in the dictionary, the only meanings for is were dealing with veterinary medicine. Suddenly it's everywhere.
Thanks.

1. RE: Original Message
I think the meaning context you're hearing recently is...

v. vet·ted, vet·ting, vets - To subject to thorough examination or evaluation: vet a manuscript.

Derivation...

Cf. It. corvettare. See Curvet, Italian corvetta, from Old Italian, from Old French courbette, from courber, to curve, from Latin curvre, from curvus, curved.

3. From "veterinarian"
Before a horse can race it has to be vetted, ie. given a vet checkup to make sure it's healthy and hasn't been given performance enhancing drugs. This is what I've been told and it's probably not true but it has a nice metaphorical link to elections as horse races. ;-)
