1. WW II
Copper was needed for the war effort. I don't think they're steel. I think they're zinc.

2. Copper was needed in the
war effort. Steel seemed like a good choice at the time. Take care or they will turn to rust.

5. It's zinc-plated steel...
and they are NOT rare (I have hundreds). They rust easily and look awful, but the best Brilliant Uncirculateds are quite beautiful.

6. you can buy average circulated steels for about 40-cents each...
or less. BU's cost $3-$4 unless they are of the higher BU grades.

8. 1909 indian cents are not that unusual........
Edited on Sun May-02-04 10:57 PM by mrbill
The mintage of the 1909 cent was 14,370,645.

In good to very good condition these sell in the $2-$4 range. Coins in better condition go for a little more.

However, the 1909-s indian with a mintage of 309,000 is a rariety that starts out in the $100 range.

on edit, spell check

9. The 1909 is common...
about 14 million struck, BUT the 1909-S (San Francisco mint) is one of the very rarest... only 310,00 or so struck -- very valuable, especially in higher grades.
