OK, What's your favorite, or Most Memorable Breakup Song
Edited on Sun May-02-04 07:11 PM by new_beawr
In College, I was dumped hard by an incredible woman (the only ex that my wife feels jealousy toward). The Wall had just been released. I listened to Comfortably Numb, over and over and over to the point where I still get woozy when I hear it.

That's my big breakup song, I am SURE there's a lotta good stories out there...

4. "I Hope You Dance"
I always think of my first wife when I hear this one...

"I Hope You Dance" (Lee Ann Womack)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder.
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger.
May you never take one single breath for granted.
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed.
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens.
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance.
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

(CHORUS)
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance.
Never settle for the path of least resistance.
Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'.
Lovin'might be a mistake but it's worth makin'.
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter.
When you come close to sellin'out, reconsider.
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance.
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

(CHORUS) Including harmony with the following backing vocals...
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along.
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens.
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance.
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

(slight pause) Dance
I hope you dance.

9. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
I dumped a really sweet guy in high school because we were really just friends and nothing more. I left him because a guy I really liked a lot asked me out. So, to try to change my mind about breaking up, he made a cassette tape with that song playing in the background over and over and over again. He talked the whole time about how much he loved me and how the guy I left him for was 'our' thorn. It was so corny, but to this day when I hear that song, I think, poor Bob.

13. Smokey Robinson's written maybe 10 of the top 100 of 'em...
But his incandescent "The Love I Saw In You Was Just a Mirage" is spellbinding. It's the song that moved Dylan to refer to him as "America's Greatest Living Poet" in 1966.

THERE YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL
THE PROMISE OF LOVE WAS WRITTEN ON YOUR FACE
YOU LED ME ON WITH UNTRUE KISSES
YOU HELD ME CAPTURED IN YOUR FALSE EMBRACE
QUICKER THAN I CAN BAT AN EYE
SINCE YOU WERE TELLING ME GOODBYE

OH, JUST A MINUTE AGO YOUR LOVE WAS HERE
ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SEEM TO DISAPPEAR
SWEETNESS WAS ONLY HEARTACHES CAMOUFLAGE
THE LOVE I SAW IN YOU WAS JUST A MIRAGE

WE USE TO MEET IN ROMANTIC PLACES
YOU GAVE THE ILLUSION THAT YOUR LOVE WAS REAL
NOW ALL THAT'S LEFT ARE LIPSTICK TRACES
FROM THE KISSES YOU ONLY PRETENDED TO FEEL
AND NOW OUR MEETINGS YOU AVOID
AND SO MY WORLD YOU HAVE DESTROYED

OH, JUST A MINUTE AGO YOUR LOVE WAS HERE
ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SEEM TO DISAPPEAR
THE WAY YOU WRECKED MY LIFE WAS LIKE SABOTAGE
THE LOVE I SAW IN YOU WAS JUST A MIRAGE

OH, OH, OH YOU ONLY FEEL ME WITH DESPAIR
BY SHOWING LOVE THAT WASN'T THERE
OH, JUST LIKE THE DESERT SHOWS A THIRSTY MAN
GREEN OASIS WHERE THERE'S ONLY SAND
YOU LURED ME INTO SOMETHING I SHOULD HAVE DODGED
THE LOVE I SAW IN YOU WAS JUST A MIRAGE

15. Crying Time

Oh it's crying time again, you're gonna leave me
I can see that far away look in your eyes
I can tell by the way you hold me darling
That it won't be long before it's crying time

Now they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder
And that tears are only rain to make love grow
Well my love for you could never grow no stronger
If I lived to be a hundred years old

Oh it's crying time again, you're gonna leave me
I can see that far away look in your eyes
I can tell by the way you hold me darling
That it won't be long before it's crying time

Now you say you've found someone you love better
That's the way it's happened every time before
And as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow
Crying time will start when you walk out the door

"Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)"

Could I hold on, or should I hold on to you?
Ask, I'll tell the truth; there's nothing I should hide
And if I move to slow, if you're bored I need to know
I'm weak to hide inside, to force what I don't feel

If all we have is a question, there's no hope to find a future
But something in me cries for you
It feels too real this time

I think I love you, though I don't know what that means
Girl of my dreams, or a friend that one day leaves?
Could I trust this when I've lied to myself before?
Will I do it all again to taste what I've imagined we could be?

Look what I've become; this pressure that we feel
In a world of possibilities, this may not prove real
But could we give enough, backed against a wall?
Too close to breathe, but too far to fall
All I ever wanted was to feel you closer to me
And it's sad to feel this resistance
What once before had felt so free

Let tomorrow bee
I can't be so impatient
Pushing every answer, when there isn't any question
Let me feel good now
And though this may have to end, I hope I'm always with you
Honestly your friend
I think I love you

Her name was Laura.

We broke up -- she initiated it -- when the song "Think of Laura" was at its peak on the pop charts.

She was the first girl I was "serious" with. I was totally unprepared for it. Well, you live and learn. Me, anyway.

What's she doing now? I can't say. But she was a staunch Democrat, one of her many saving graces.

29. Almost anybody sings Dylan better than Dylan
Among my favorite versions of Don't Think Twice are the one by Peter, Paul and Mary and the one by the lady about whom the song was written, Joan Baez.

Some of my other favorite break up songs are Joan Baez' "she said" rejoinder to Dyaln's song, Diamonds and Rust, and a song by Tom Paxton, The Last Thing on My Mind.

40. His lyrics can be too
I think he delivers his lyrics better than anyone else does. I will agree that there are many many many better singers than Bob. But nobody tells his poetry, and that's what his songs are, better than he does. But yeah, I sure as hell wouldn't want to hear him sing Michael Row the Boat Ashore.

52. He does his own songs better than any other
cover by any other singer could possibly do, with the exception of Peter, Paul and Mary, who did some good covers of his stuff. There's no comparison, say, between HIS version of his song "With God on our Side", and Joan Baez's version.

51. Now, I LOVE LOVE LOVE
Dylan, I consider him one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, songwriters of the 20th century and a perfect poet for the sixties, and he's still writing great stuff.

But his concerts--HUH-UH! I'd been waiting since very young childhood to see him in concert, and when I finally did, 13 years ago at the age of 26, OMG I just couldn't believe it! He gives the WORST concert I have EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!! My parents tried to warn me, they'd seen him before and said it wasn't worth the money but I had to find out for myself. It WAS worth it, however, to at least see my personal God in person finally!!!

In all fairness to him, he hates giving concerts and he doesn't even like singing all that much, by his own admission. He mostly just enjoys writing the songs but he knows it's expected of him to sing them and give concerts.

The sister of my high school bf called to say he had been with his ex that night. (behind my back) Anyway, that was the song I was listening to when I found out. It was a somber kind of song (to me anyway) and I listened to it all night long. My bf later told me that his ex's eyes were blue!!! We still dated off and on for about eight or nine years after that!!!!

38. "I Wanna Be Around" by Tony Bennett
I wanna be around
To pick up the pieces
When somebody breaks your heart
Some somebody twice as smart
As I

A somebody who
Once swore to be true
Like you used to do with me
Who'll leave you to learn
That misery loves company
Wait and see

I mean, I wanna be around
To see how he does it
When he breaks your heart to bits
Let's see if the puzzle fits so fine

That's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet
As I stand there applauding from a front-row seat
When somebody breaks your heart
Like you broke mine

Honorable mention - from Harry Nilsson -\

You're breaking my heart
You're tearing it apart
So fuck you!

46. he thinks he'll keep her
Mary Chapin Carpenter
he thinks he'll keep her

She makes his coffee, she makes his bed
She does the laundry, she keeps him fed
When she was twenty-one she wore her mother's lace
She said "forever" with a smile upon her face
She does the car-pool, she PTAs
Doctors and dentists, she drives all day
When she was twenty-nine she delivered number three
And every Christmas card showed a perfect family
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
She packs his suitcase, she sits and waits
With no expression upon her face
When she was thirty-six she met him at their door
She said I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
For fifteen years she had a job and not one raise in pay
Now she's in the typing pool at minimum wage
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
At least until you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her

50. "All of My Heart" by ABC
Once upon a time when we were friends
I gave you my heart. The story ends
No happy ever after, now were friends

Wish upon a star if that might help
The stars collide if you decide
Wish upon a star if that might help

What's it like to have loved and to lose her touch?
What's it like to have loved and to lose that much?

Well I hope and I pray
That maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart
Add and subtract
But as a matter of fact
Now that you're gone I still want you back
Remembering
Surrendering
Remembering that part
All of my heart

Spilling up pink silk and coffee lace
You hook me up, I rendevouz at your place
Your lipstick and your lip gloss seals my fate

Sentimental powers might help you now
But skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers
You'll be disappointed and I'll lose a friend

No I won't be told there's a crock of gold
at the end of the rainbow
Or that pleasure and pain, sunshine and rain
Might make this love grow

But I hope and I pray
That maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart
Add and subtract
But as a matter of fact
Now that you're gone I still want you back
Remembering
Surrendering
The kindest cut's the cruellest part
All of my heart

Yes I hope and I pray
That maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart
And I shrug and I say
That maybe today
You'll come home soon
Surrendering
Remembering
Surrendering that part-
All of my heart
All of my heart
