Life's Little Victories, Political Edition
Well, I did it - yesterday at the Legislative District caucus, I won election as a delegate to the next level. I'll be going on to the Congressional District caucus as a delegate for the 8th District (the district Dunn is retiring from), and onto the State convention, where I will stand for election as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. Boston, here I come! (Since there will only be three delegates to National from the entire 8th District, I think snowballs in hell are an apt metaphor here, but given how well I did yesterday, I am actually encouraged enough to try.)

I cannot believe how many people came up to me and complimented me on my statement and my obvious belief in what I was saying. The most touching thing of all was the woman who came up to me afterward and said that of all the candidates, I was the only one she felt would speak for her family, as hers was a gay family. How she knew that, I don't know, but she's right; I fervently believe in the equality and dignity of all families, including single persons and those living in alternative lifestyles. She even offered financial assistance if I were elected to National, which is an amazing compliment. I'm still flying. :D :D :D

Below is the text of my speech, for anyone who's interested.

Good morning. My name is Geni H., and I think we should all go on a NO CARB diet: NO Cheney, NO Ashcroft, NO Rumsfeld, and NO BUSH. I think it’s time we got rid of some dead weight in our White House. I’m running for delegate because I am outraged and I believe it is important to do whatever is in my power to bring about a regime change in this country. I’m running for delegate because I am frightened of the restrictions being placed on our civil liberties, because I am insulted that my patriotism is questioned if I don’t believe in unilateral preemptive attacks on other nations, and because I am truly sick of having my country’s precious resources handed back to the robber barons. I am angry at seeing friends and families lose their jobs because this administration believes outsourcing is good for the economy. I am furious at seeing the reforms put in place during the New Deal 70 years ago dismantled, one by one. I am outraged, and I believe that if you are not, you have not been paying attention.

I believe we can best support our troops by giving them a Commander-In-Chief who knows what combat means, not a tin soldier who remembers so little about his days in the Air National Guard that he doesn’t even know enough to unfasten his flight harness before he tries to walk. I believe it is time for a President who will not send our troops into harm’s way unnecessarily, because he has been there himself. I want a President I don’t have to apologize to the rest of the world for. This administration is afraid of John Kerry and his record; witness the smear campaign that’s already started, the same despicable tactics they used to malign John McCain and Max Cleland.

We cannot match this opposition dollar for dollar, so we must match them door for door. We must get involved and stay involved, and we must give the apathetic a reason to vote, a reason to hope. We must rally the disenfranchised and those who feel their interests are not fairly represented.

My name is Geni H., and if you vote for me as your delegate, I will do my best to make these words come true: LIKE FATHER LIKE SON: ONE TERM!

Thank you.

2. you GO girl!
Terrific.
I'd add two things if you have the opportunity to give that speech at the next level:
The NO CARB bit: and absolutley NO RICE!
and
Like father, like son.
One term and he's done.

I may also add a line about the fact that I have a nephew and two cousins currently serving in Iraq, and I want them home safely, NOW.

5. and a little bit of gratuitous bragging:
I was the #5 vote-getter out of 30 candidates (19 of us went as delegates) - and everyone who got more votes than I did is a long-term familiar face in district politics. I'm fairly new to this kind of activism, having started attending the district meetings and such only this year. So I'm really encouraged by this degree of success to go ahead and try for National.

I didn't realize people would ALREADY be campaigning for National at yesterday's caucus; the more experienced candidates had handouts. I'll have handouts ready for next week's county convention. (It's the CD delegates that vote for the National delegates, so those are the people to impress, anyway. And they're all running against me!)

7. it gives me hope for the 8th yet
I lived in that district for 12 years (I voted absentee when at school elsewhere), and with Dunn on her way out, I hope things can turn around. I am taking notes on what you have learned so far, so I can put it to use in my district here (AZ's 1st - which is a swing district, and Paul Babbitt has good odds of taking away the seat of incumbent slimeball Rick Renzi).

Anyway, brag away!

23. No more Rod-Chandler-in-a-dress!
That's always been my term for Dunn - I've never been able to stand the woman. The woman who always runs against her, Heidi Behrens-Benedict is a really nice woman, but not much of a campaigner. I'm kind of pinning my hopes on Alex Anders to win that seat. It's the first time in 20+ years that seat's been anywhere near our grasp.

29. I worked for Heidi
On her 2000 campaign. She was super-sweet - even brought me a cup of coffee when I arrived at campaign HQ, but yeah, no political instinct.

Still, just having a chance at phoning constituents and telling them Dunn was lying about being pro-choice...bwhahahaha. That was worth it.

That was the night of the Lieberman-Cheney "debate" - it was on in the background, lol.

are delegates for the democratic convention to be held in Houston. They haven't been politically involved but as of late they are both school teachers, when superfund defunct my dad's previous career went with it. I hope they get more involved because of the experience

:yourock:
A No CARB diet for me too!

NO Cheney, NO Ashcroft, NO Rumsfeld, and NO BUSH.

This would make a great bumper sticker, t-shirt and protest sign.

Congratulations to you, and if your state is wise, they'll send you on to the Nationals. You have heart, the intelligence and a tremendous knowledge base which would further enrich your state.

:bounce: :) :toast:

I'm only an alternate (my precinct only has 1 delegate and 1 alternate since it's highly Repub).

But I'm so excited! This is my first year of involvement as well. And definitely not the last!

Good speech!

19. Are you also in Washington?
There were a lot of alternates at Saturday's LD caucus who got seated as delegates, so make sure to attend all your caucuses...if the delegates don't show, the alternates take their places!

There will be correspondingly fewer alternates who get seated at the CD caucuses, as the people who are delegates to that are the ones who wanted it enough to actually campaign for it. And I'll bet the alternates for National hardly ever get seated as delegates and hardly ever get to vote - but an alternate still gets to attend!

We'll be working to get Democrats elected at all the levels, but the main purpose of these caucuses is to a) choose a Presidential nominee, and b) get people fired up to work toward electing Democrats!

Based on what people said to me Saturday, I got some people fired up! Now to preach to those who are NOT in the choir!

16. There's 3 spaces for delegates in the 8th District...
but we already have at least 5 people running just from our legislative district, which is only one of about 25 in the whole 8th. My chances are pretty slim, but I'm still gonna try.

And woo-hoo for you, too!

(By the way, I tried to hold out as a delegate for Kucinich, but the way our district worked out, we didn't have the 13% support he'd need in order to get a delegate. But my heart still belongs to Dennis.)

My favorite line: "I believe we can best support our troops by giving them a Commander-In-Chief who knows what combat means, not a tin soldier who remembers so little about his days in the Air National Guard that he doesn’t even know enough to unfasten his flight harness before he tries to walk." Still laughing! :hi:

There were a few Air Force vets in the crowd who knew EXACTLY what that meant...any REAL pilot knows enough to unfasten the flight harness, so he doesn't walk like he has a broomstick up his butt! What a TOOL!
