I was watching my Best of Phil Hartman DVD and I was reminded of how many touching moments, some unintentional at the time, SNL has produced.
One of the things on the DVD was the "Schiller Reel" called Love is a Dream where an elderly Jan Hooks goes to a bank vault to retrieve her tiara and remember dancing with the love of her life, played by Phil Hartman. I remember seeing that when it first aired and thinking it was kinda dumb (since it wasn't meant to be funny yet SNL is a comedy show) but at the SNL 25th anniversary show a teary Jan Hooks introduced the bit as their memory of Phil.
Another more-touching-than-intended moment was back in the classic SNL days where they did a similar serious-subject-on-a-comedy-show bit where and aged John Belushi visits a cemetary where all the original SNL castmembers were buried while he talks about being the only one left. Considering he ended up being the first one to die, it puts an entirely different context on the bit when you see it now.
One that always got me was the episode Steve Martin hosted the day Gilda Radner died, where instead of the usual host banter, they just showed the classic bit where Steve and Gilda danced around a disco that was frozen in time.
Of course one can't forget SNL's first show back after 9/11. Even now when 9/11 is used as an emotional ploy in political circles, the sight of the SNL stage filled with NYC police and firemen just 18 days after the worst tragedy the US has ever seen could put a lump in even the most cynical throat.
