2. Try This
8 medium size Mint leaves
1.5 tbsp simple sugar syrup
1.5 oz Bourbon
1/4 tsp Angostura Bitters

Blend in electric mixer for a few seconds until mint leaves are reduced. Strain into glass packed with shaved ice. Add more Bourbon to saturate ice and garnish with a sprig of Mint.

Still, any version of a Mint Julep tastes nasty.

3. Here ya go:
Though there are as many ways to make a mint julep as there are new england clam chowder, and people are as adamantly opposed to any recipe but their own for juleps as they are for chowder, I offer, fully understanding the imminent threat of flaming, my recipe for mint juleps:

Use a tall clear glass (proper glassware is essential for all drinks, and juleps should never be served in colored glasses, or glasses with designs on them, nor glasses with metal at the rim or anywhere else). Or you can also go with a pewter cup and irish linen, so that the hand does not disturb the frost on the cup.

Put two shots bourbon, 6 mint sprigs, and 2-4 TBSP of simple syrup in the glass, along with a couple ice cubes, and muddle it for a minute or so. Then let it sit for a couple minutes. Strain into a glass filled with shaved ice, top with soda water and a mint sprig.

OR - after the muddling, remove the ice cubes but leave the mint/bourbon mixture, add new ice cubes and top with soda water and a mint sprig.

Do not drink the mint juleps at the Kentucky derby, or any other drink that ever comes out of a hose at the bar.

4. Metal Cups Are An Exception With The Mint Julep
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 07:49 AM by Don_G
The "preferred" cup with the Mint Julep is silver or silver-plated.

They're so common in Louisville, they're often seen in the thrift stores after everyone has sampled their first Mint Julep.

On Edit: Adding a link from the Churchill Downs web site for the "offical" Mint Julep: http://www.kentuckyderby.com/2004/derby_experience/mint_julep.html

5. Simplicity
Put 5 or so mint leaves (the more the better) in the bottom of a rocks glass. Add 1 tsp sugar & mash with a spoon to crush/bruise the leaves. Fill glass with crushed ice then fill with bourbon, give it a stir and garnish with mint leaves.

6. this is what I do
I grow my own mint and I think I get more of a kick out of the smell of the mint and crushing of the mint that anything else.
