HBO's Deadwood.
Every 3 minutes, somebody says "Cocksucker". All they say is "Cocksucker, Cocksucker, Cocksucker". Even Calamity Jane!:eyes:

Good story, but some of the UGLIEST actors in Hollywood history. That guy with lazy eye and the scar down his mouth that killed Wild Bill Hickock is harder to look at than John Turturro! And I never thought women could be so ugly as Calamity Jane.

2. Mrs bearfan doesn't like me to watch it with the baby here.
Our 3 1/2 year old granddaughter repeated some Soprano lines already. Out of the clear blue one time after watching the Sopranos with me she yells F#ck YOU ! I got bitched at. It is on when I am getting ready for work.

3. Welcome to the REAL wild west
A place where everyone cursed like sailors and people committed the cardinal sin of not all looking like fashion models.

You didn't think the real West looked like Gunsmoke episodes, did you?

5. "Cursed like sailors" -- but not 21st century sailors
I think the series is OK, but a lot of the profanity strikes me as anachronistic. "Fuck" is old English, but "cocksucker"? And call me a hopeless romantic, but I like to think that late-19th-century profanity was more varied and interesting than the two or three constantly repeated expletives of Deadwood.

12. I heard an interview with David Milch (creator) about the cursing
and he said something of the sort like the cursing was all researched.

Basically he said that in a lot of lawless areas cursing was a form of admonishment, keeping people in line in a social context.

It was on NPR, good interview with him.

I never ever use those vile words, but they ARE the way people talked back then.. You can almost SMELL the stench wafting off of those filthy people..

It's waaaaay better than the Sopranos..

They are replaying episodes 1-2-3 this Friday.. For those of you who did not watch because you thought you would not like it...WATCH .. It's a great show..(and I hated all westerns).. I see it as a character study, with history woven in.. the western aspect of it is quite irrelevant.. It's the PEOPLE who are so interesting.. and add to that the fact that the REAL west was JUST this way...

People who went west, were renegades/searchers/outcasts.. The "safe" ones stayed in St Louis.. There was NO law.. People pretty much did whatever the hell they wanted to..

It was a Libertarian wet-dream :)

26. I tend to believe him. He did over a year of research on the language`
and I have read some contemporary journals which were quite colorful. I think we forget how real people speak in situations like that.
There is no "society" to hold people back from killing each other, so what is the point of restraining lanuage?

As for the ugly characters. It was an ugly place and time. Civil war vets roaming around with badly healed physical, as well as emotional, wounds were everywhere. For many of them who came from border states like Missouri, Kentucky, Tenn, Virginia or Kansas there was no home to go back to.

That and the lure of fast riches, well, you have what you see here, not what Roy Rodgers wanted you to see.

There's lots of profanity now, but the same 3-4 things are mostly used over and over again.

6. I have a etymology question
Would "cocksucker" have been a common slang word in the 1860's?

But I like Deadwood - it is probably one of the first "historically honest" western shows.

The Women go Ga-ga over Seth over at the boards at Telveison without Pity. And the Hottie woman over at the Union is easy on the eyes as well.. So it balenced as far as people go..I know i CANT STAND a show that has nothing but pretty people on it.
Hey there aint nothing wrong with Jane that a day long bath and 10 hours at the wax salon would not cure..Id date her then..
On edit: COuld you imagine the cuss words that would be flying outa Janes mouth going to a wax salon. Hee! It would make a Devil Posessed Regan from the Excorsist Blush!

24. Yes. Tired of the romantic notions of the Old West.
The Old West has been ridiculously overly romaticised. Speaking some truth to the neo-cons who claim how great the "Good Old Days" were is EXACTLY what's needed.

clothes, bad teeth,

show it all.

With the neocons trying to take us back to the "Good Ole Days" lets remind the world so people won't want to follow.

35. Yes, it does. We Americans have a ridiculous ideal
of what the "West" was like. We need to know that we are scum, begat of scum and stop pretending that everyone does not know what the real world is like.

Maybe 70% of the people in this country would believe we are engaged in an illegal war in Iraq if they knew what we did to Indians, Italians, Irish, Germans, Chinese, Quakers, Shakers, Mormons, and still do it to gays. Forget blacks, they have their own special place in this hell that is America.

We have to open our eyes. to the good and the bad. that is the way to true enlightenment.

36. Yes, the creepy Reverend wrote a couple of books, long out of print,
but available in better libraries (if you have one that has not been downsized) he came by his religion after getting shot in the head at the Battle of Shiloh and being tossed in a pile of the dead.
He had visions while unconscious and emerged after 3 days to fight no more.
Go figure.

28. I'm Al Swearengen and I approved this fucking message...
(written and posted originally by Skrunch 4/20)

My Fellow Americans:

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to state the obvious, that is, what we have occupying the White House is no "Commander-In-Chief". I wouldn't trust that mush-mouthed cretin to command a turd from his own bowels upon arising let alone run a "War On Terror". Dosen't say much for the advantages of an Ivy League education now does it? (I must admit, however, a twinge of admiration for that cocksucker Cheney; why he needs that pious prick puppet dangling from his strings is beyond my imagining.)

Be that as it may, I submit that to truly win this war, you need somebody who is willing to go toe-to-toe with these evil heathen scumbags and give them a taste of their own medicine.

You need somebody who is gonna keep that cocksucker Osama's eyes in his pocket after they pop out of their sockets cause his balls replace them after I kick him in the crotch.

(To the womenfolk: I apologize for my blunt language and use of metaphor, but the time for pussyfooting around has ended.)

So if you want someone who will send those heathen cocksuckers to hell sans virgins, I'm the only man who can get the job done.

So vote Swearengen for President...

...or go fuck yourselves!

29. What Mr. Swearengen meant to say...
To the Electorate and General Populace:

It has come to my attention that a certain epistle has leaked out authored by my employer, one Mr. Alfred "Al" Swearengen.

As you can tell by it's colorful colloquialisms, Mr. Swearengen is not given to flowery language such as those as his Yale elite opponents may be wont to use. Mr. Swearengen is a plain-spoken man who does not suffer fools gladly, nay even at all, and as such would not even consider the current occupant of the Oval Office fit to employ to empty chamber pots in his gaming establishment, let alone leader of the free world. Therefore, Mr. Swearengen feels it is necessary, albeit reluctantly, to throw his hat into the ring (preferably a dandy bowler type).

However, since the recent implementation of rules on so-called "indecent speech", Mr. Swearengen feels he needs a modicum of time with a speech coach in order to curb his tendencies to run afoul of the proscribed words in order that his press availibilities refrain from sounding like a series of electronic bleeps and whatnot, thus confusing the electorate into perhaps thinking that Mr. Swearengen is some kind of outer space alien which, I can attest that being an acquaintance of many years, he most assuredly is not.

Therefore it is necessary to have all press enquiries go through my office until such time as the Swearengen for President campaign is ready to mount up and ride to the rescue of these great United States of America, such time hopefully being the very near future.

I remain your humble servant.

E. B. Farnum
Director of Communications
Swearengen for President '04
