Are you among the 98%, or are you among the 2%? Take the test...
I'm a 98%er. I relish my trait as an independent thinker, but this one freaked me out. Please follow the directions, and post below. Let us know if you are "Abby Normal"...

This test determines human thought patterns. Humans fall into 1 of
2 percentiles: 98% or 2%. 98% think alike, and the remaining 2%
stray from the norm.

Here's the test:

Just follow the instructions as quickly as possible. Do not go to
the next calculation before you have finished the previous one. You
do not need to write or remember the answers, just do it using your
mind. You'll be surprised by the results...

Ready,

Go....

How much is:

15+6

3+56

89+2

12+53

75+26

25+52

63+32

Come on, one more...

123+5

QUICK! THINK ABOUT A TOOL AND A COLOR!

Scroll further to the bottom...

A bit more...

You have just thought about a red hammer, haven't you????

If this is not the case, you are among 2% of people who have
a "different" if not "abnormal" mind. 98% of those tested would
answer a "red hammer" while doing this exercise

76. My guess
is that hammers were the first tools we used as kids (and most likely as cave-people); and that red, being the color of our blood, is the most primal of the primary colors.

But what the hell do I know?

117. Yeah, I think the test is not being honest.
The fact that so many DUers were supposedly in the "2%" group I became curious and googled "the 98% and the 2%" thinking those words might reveal more information about the test itself. (I also noted that there was no source to the claim that 98% of the people taking this test would think of a red hammer.)

Well, I couldn't find the source of the test but it was interesting that at 4 different site that I visited, all message boards like DU, they all had a lot of people in the "2%" bracket.

The real interesting thing was that there was quite a variety of sites (a Christian site with a somewhat older crowd, a site devoted to games and mind puzzles, a site for computer geeks and a site dedicated to owners of Boxer dogs), yet they all had this thing happening where a lot more than 2% of the quiztakers were in the "2%".

The even more interesting aspect of it was, all of the posters on the various sites seemed to like the idea that they were in the extreme minority of the 2%ers except those on the Christian site. A lot of them seemed to be rather dismayed that they were in the "abnormal" group.

Fascinating study of human behavior, it would be great to a see a full analysis of this thing.

Tool and a color -- you think of a hammer and the commie flag, which is mostly red with a yellow hammer.

I thought of a hammer and wasn't sure if it was yellow or red -- later I realized that what I was thinking of is the Soviet, or the Chinese, flag.

A hammer is a common tool.

Many people identify "red" as their favourite colour.

I picked "sledgehammer" because it's my favourite tool to fix computers and "white" because I was looking at this page on the monitor which happens to display white.

Validity studies? There cannot be two distinct per centiles. The 98 per centile may or may not be inclusive of the 1 per centile. There is only the possibility of 1-99 on per centiles.

94. Theory: I DID think red hammer from the beginning, but I wonder.
Since so many DUers claim to have had a different thought, is it the power of suggestion in the conclusion?

We all like to believe we are independent thinkers but I truly did think red hammer before it was "suggested" in the conclusion.

DUers by and large wouldn't fall for the "suggestion" or else they may not want to admit it.

Discuss?

110. Took a test like this once...
There are three aspects to this test.

1) Numbers and calculations
2) Symbols
3) Following orders

The trick, for lack of a better word, is in the instructions, which is the part that most people don't really consider as actually a part of the test, but which is actually the point of it. In other words, if you follow the instructions closely, you're pre-disposed to being in the "98%" because you're letting someone else dictate your behavior. That behavior is what gets the result desired.

The rest is based on the way the brain works. The test is designed to keep one half the brain engaged while the other half essentially sleeps (no writing or remembering required) long enough to develop a momentary pattern of behavior. That pattern does not deal well with the sudden necessity of thinking of a color and an object. The more closely you follow the instructions, the more likely you are to hit the suggestion of the red hammer before your brain can fully wake up and think of a color and object on its own.

The test is really about how well you have been indoctrinated into the "always follow the instructions" mindset.

123. Interesting thesis, but...
... where does it "suggest" the red hammer, except right at the end? I thought of a green hammer before I saw the bit about 98% say red hammer.

also, how does following the instructions pre-depose the quiz-taker to being in the "98%"? I followed the instructions very closely and still thought of a green hammer.

Most likely I am just thinking about this silly thing entirely way too much...

127. My explanation is flawed...

I looked at it again, and my explanation is flawed, mostly because I was basing it on the test I took, which was a bit different than this. It just seems to be based on the same premise. This is a kind of "magic trick," and it has several variations. One asks you to think of a vegetable, for instance.

In any case, this test works because of the way our left brains and right brains work, both separately and together. The point of it is to get your mind working on numbers and then have it switch quickly to objects and colors. There are subconscious symbolic relationships at work that interact with short term and long term memory, and I can by no means explain it. It also has something to do with timing between stimuli and response to the stimuli, something again that takes place on a subconscious level.

Edited on Wed Apr-28-04 08:55 AM by kmla
Here I am.

There was no scientific poll to decide the 98%/2% division. I was simply regurgitating a cut and paste e-mail that I had received.

However, I was freaked out in the fact that I had selected red/hammer - I always thought of myself as a non-conformist and individualistic free thinker.

Honestly, though, did everyone follow the directions? If you read, you were supposed to go through it as quick as possible, WITHOUT stopping to analyze what you were doing...

If you didn't, and possibly thought your answers through, (expressly against the rules, you naughty, naughty, people!) you probably wouldn't have come up with a hammer, or the color red. Oooor, maybe you would have. Hmmmmmm.

Think of it this way. If you were on Family Feud, in the speed round, what would be your response to these two questions?

"Name a color."
"Name a common tool."

Quick. No thinking. Would you still have the same answer? Maybe yes, maybe no. But I would hypothesize that a few more might have come up witht the red/hammer combo than actually did.

That's all I gots ta say...;-)

P.S. Don't forget - it is said that 72% of all statistics are made up right on the spot.
